Book Description
Thermoelectric materials are utilized in a wide variety of applications related to solid-state refrigeration or small-scale power generation. More specifically, these applications range from beverage coolers to power generation for deep-space probes such as the Voyager missions. Over the past several years, however, research in the field of thermoelectric materials has been undergoing a rapid rebirth. The enhanced interest in better thermoelectric materials has been driven by the need for much higher performance and new temperature regimes in thermoelectric devices. The focus of this volume is embodied in the title, New Directions and Approaches. The volume emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of the research needed to advance the science and technology. Theoretical studies in materials design, which provide guidance to the experimentalist, are reviewed. Experimental efforts are also featured and include new capabilities in solid-state synthesis, thin-film and superlattice development, and new developments in property measurement of which thermal conductivity will play a central role. New ideas in device design are also discussed.

Book Description
Thermoelectric materials are utilized in a wide variety of applications related to solid-state refrigeration or small-scale power generation. Thermoelectric cooling is an "environmentally friendly" method of small-scale cooling in specific applications such as cooling computer chips and laser diodes. Thermoelectric materials are used in a wide range of applications from beverage coolers to power generation for deep-space probes such as the Voyager missions. Over the past thirty years, alloys based on the Bi-Te systems ((Bi(1-x)Sb(x))2 (Te(1-x)Se(x)3Z and Si(1-x)Ge(x) systems have been extensively studied and optimized for their use as thermoelectric materials to perform a variety of solid-state thermoelectric refrigeration and power generation tasks. Despite this extensive investigation of the traditional thermoelectric materials, there is still a substantial need and room for improvement, and thus, entirely new classes of compounds will have to be investigated.

Book Description
This volume, the 3rd in a series from the Materials Research Society, examines the current state of the art in thermoelectric materials research. The focus is on both the scientific capabilities currently employed, and those which are needed to provide new classes of thermoelectric materials with significant enhancement in the figure of merit, Z (100% or greater). This is a challenge for the thermoelectrics community, and thus drives the discussion towards new and innovative directions. Potential applications for thermoelectric technologies are discussed, with emphasis on typing specific materials properties/issues to the desired applications. Overviews of current application needs from thermoelectric devices, and thus the requirements for new materials or device design, are also featured. The volume is multidisciplinary in nature, with representation from the fields of physics, chemistry and materials science. Theoretical studies are presented, as well as experimental efforts in solid-state synthesis, new bulk materials, think-film and superlattice development, nanostructure materials, and new developments in property measurement, especially thermal conductivity.

Book Description
Symposium B, "Thermoelectric Materials Research and Device Development for Power Conversion and Refrigeration," held from November 26 - 30 at the 2012 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, was the tenth in a series of symposia on state-of-the-art materials and technologies for direct thermal-to-electric energy conversion that produced proceedings with primary focus on material and technological advances of thermoelectrics and thermionics [see MRS Proceedings volumes 234, 478, 545, 626, 691, 793, 886, 1044 and 1166]. In this symposium there were 263 contributed presentations, the largest by far at the MRS, including 10 invited talks and 168 poster presentations. These presentations were given from researchers from academia, national laboratories, and industry in the United States, Asia and Europe. The symposia covered a broad range of topics in the areas of materials, measurement techniques, and device development. This volume provides an overview of the exciting recent developments in the field.

Book Description
This book provides a benchmark for the state of the field of thermoelectric materials research and development. Highlights of the volume include results on superlattices that show a ZT = 2.4 at room temperature in p-type Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 superlattice thermoelectrics. In addition, preliminary results on p-n couple devices from these superlattices indicate fast-acting spot cooling in addition to improved performance. Thermoelectric materials are utilized in a wide variety of applications related to solid-state refrigeration or small-scale power generation. The book focuses on traditional thermoelectric materials new materials as well as developments in device engineering. Many papers presented here revolve around either maximizing the numerator of Z, called the power factor, or by minimizing l. Topics include: guidance to advanced thermoelectric research; skutterudites; new materials, approaches and measurements; clathrates; chalcogenides; devices; thermoelectric materials and devices - research and development; nanowires and oxides.
