Book Description
Fusion energy is considered to be an attractive energy form because of its minimal environmental impact. In order to maintain this favorable status, every effort needs to be made to use low activation materials wherever possible. The tritium breeder blanket is a focal point of system design engineers who must design environmentally attractive blankets through the use of low activation materials. Of the several candidate lithium-containing ceramics being considered for use in the breeder blanket, Li2O, Li2TiO3, are attractive choices because of their low activation. Also, low activation materials like the vanadium alloys are being considered for use as structural materials in the blanket. The suitability of vanadium alloys for containment of lithium ceramics is the subject of this study. Thermodynamic evaluations are being used to estimate the compatibility and stability of candidate ceramic breeder materials (Li2O, Li2TiO3, and Li2ZrO3) with vanadium and vanadium alloys. This thermodynamic evaluation will focus first on solid-solid interactions. As a tritium breeding blanket will use a purge gas for tritium recovery, gas-solid systems will also receive attention.

Book Description
The Knudsen effusion method was combined with a mass spectrometer sensing technique in order to measure theremodynamic quantities of solid solution alloys of V-Ti-Cr in the b.c.c. (beta) phase. The technique makes use of the regular solution model in order to treat the vaporization data in terms of ion current ratios obtained from the mass spectrometer. The incipient melting points of twenty two ternary alloys were determined. The temperature range of the vaporization experiments was limited from 1400 to 1700C for alloy compositions ranging from 10 to 66 atomic percent of each of the three components of the ternary system. Within the experimental temperature range, a regular solution model modified for ternary interactions represented the thermodynamic behavior in the b.c.c. (beta) phase. Interaction parameters for Ti-C, V-Cr, and Ti-Cr were found to be temperature independent. However, a temperature dependent interaction parameter was determined for the Ti-Cr system when the ternary alloy data and data on the binary system in the literature were combined. An expression for the temperature dependent interaction parameter for the Ti-Cr system was obtained using both binary and ternary alloy data. The experimental results on the interaction parameters agree with calculated estimates from phase diagrams and theoretically calculated values. (Author).

Book Description
The Knudsen effusion method was combined with a mass spectrometer sensing technique in order to measure thermodynamic quantities of solid solution alloys of V-Ti in the b.c.c. (beta) phase. The technique makes use of the regular solution model in order to treat the vaporization data in terms of ion current ratios obtained from the mass spectrometer. The internal consistency between the data was demonstrated by calculating the relative electron impact ionization cross sections and found to agree with previously reported calculated results. The pairwise interaction parameter for the V-Ti binary alloys was found to be 1.82 plus or minus 0.13 Kcal/g-atom for the experimental temperature range of 1500 to 1725C and for .10
