During this brief period over five thousand copies have been distributed among the members of the Profession. A new edition is again called for, in order to correct and improve the work before again committing it to the press; and to this end we have labored to replace all doubtful by new and more cer tain materials, and to so blend and incorporate the additions as not to materially increase its size. Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications.
