Book Description
Sophus Lie (1842-1899) is one of Norways greatest scientific talents. His mathematical works have made him famous around the world no less than Niels Henrik Abel. The terms "Lie groups" and "Lie algebra" are part of the standard mathematical vocabulary. In his comprehensive biography the author Arild Stubhaug introduces us to both the person Sophus Lie and his time. We follow him through: childhood at the vicarage in Nordfjordeid; his youthful years in Moss; education in Christiania; travels in Europe; and learn about his contacts with the leading mathematicians of his time.

CRC Handbook of Lie Group Analysis of Differential Equations, Volume III

CRC Handbook of Lie Group Analysis of Differential Equations, Volume III PDF Author: Nail H. Ibragimov
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1040294103
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 554

Book Description
Today Lie group theoretical approach to differential equations has been extended to new situations and has become applicable to the majority of equations that frequently occur in applied sciences. Newly developed theoretical and computational methods are awaiting application. Students and applied scientists are expected to understand these methods. Volume 3 and the accompanying software allow readers to extend their knowledge of computational algebra. Written by the world's leading experts in the field, this up-to-date sourcebook covers topics such as Lie-Bäcklund, conditional and non-classical symmetries, approximate symmetry groups for equations with a small parameter, group analysis of differential equations with distributions, integro-differential equations, recursions, and symbolic software packages. The text provides an ideal introduction to modern group analysis and addresses issues to both beginners and experienced researchers in the application of Lie group methods.

Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations of First Order

Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations of First Order PDF Author: C. Carath‚odory
Publisher: American Mathematical Society
ISBN: 1470478978
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
From the Preface: The book consists of two parts. In the first part, I have made an attempt to simplify the presentation of the theory of partial differential equations to the first order so that its study will require little time and also be accessible to the average student of mathematics ? The second part, which contains the Calculus of Variations, can also be read independently if one refers back to earlier sections in Part I ? I have never lost sight of the fact that the Calculus of Variations, as it is presented in Part II, should above all be a servant of Mechanics. Therefore, I have in particular prepared everything from the very outset for treatment in multidimensional spaces. In this second English edition of Carath‚odory's famous work, the two volumes of the first edition have been combined into one (with a combination of the two indexes into a single index). There is a deep and fundamental relationship between the differential equations that occur in the calculus of variations and partial differential equations of the first order: in particular, to each such partial differential equation there correspond variational problems. This basic fact forms the rationale for Carath‚odory's masterpiece.

The Collected Papers Of Wei-liang Chow

The Collected Papers Of Wei-liang Chow PDF Author: Shiing-shen Chern
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814487937
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
This invaluable book contains the collected papers of Prof Wei-Liang Chow, an original and versatile mathematician of the 20th Century. Prof Chow's name has become a household word in mathematics because of the Chow ring, Chow coordinates, and Chow's theorem on analytic sets in projective spaces. The Chow ring has many advantages and is widely used in intersection theory of algebraic geometry. Chow coordinates have been a very versatile tool in many aspects of algebraic geometry. Chow's theorem — that a compact analytic variety in a projective space is algebraic — is justly famous; it shows the close analogy between algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory.About Professor Wei-Liang ChowThe long and distinguished career of Prof Wei-Liang Chow (1911-95) as a mathematician began in China with professorships at the National Central University in Nanking (1936-37) and the National Tung-Chi University in Shanghai (1946-47), and ultimately led him to the United States, where he joined the mathematics faculty of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, first as an associate professor from 1948 to 1950, then as a full professor from 1950 until his retirement in 1977.In addition to serving as chairman of the mathematics department at Johns Hopkins from 1955 to 1965, he was Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Mathematics from 1953 to 1977.

Differentialgleichungen

Differentialgleichungen PDF Author: Wolfgang Grobner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146847362X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
