Book Description
Heaven´s Very Special Child & The Family is a most needed book concerning the purpose of God in allowing a child who is retarded or physically disabled to be born. From personal experiences by the author, a widow of a pastor, and one of their 5 children, with Down Snydrome (Ruth lived 43 years), Edna recounts the blessings, amid many trying times. Besides her personal story, in this book are many other stories from others that touch the hearts of readers. In Part 2 of the book are original poems and songs all related to the care and inspiration given to parents and other caregivers of children who are either physically disabled or mentally retarded. And, from a religious angle, the mention of prayers, unspoken by the child are emphasized. There is a resource section also, where readers can receive further information about parenting a disabled child, and the obvious joys and benefits to themselves and to society. The poem ´Heaven´s Very Special Child´ was read and acknowledged by the late President Kennedy on the day of his assassination. As we all know, his sister was mentally retarded. The actual inspiration for the poem was through Henry Viscardi´s conversation with his mother. Henry was born without legs and became a famous author and he started a school for disabled children in New York. Building a Joyful Life with your Child who has Special Needs

Building a Joyful Life with your Child who has Special Needs PDF Author: Linda Roan-Yager
Publisher: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
ISBN: 1846425689
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
All parents want the best for their child, and for parents of children with special needs, this can mean that their own well-being is neglected. Drawing from their own experiences of parenting children with special needs, interviews and workshops with parents, and research findings, Nancy J. Whiteman and Linda Roan-Yager explore practical ways in which parents can develop a resilient and positive attitude towards caring for their child with special needs. This book considers the challenges of caring for children with physical, developmental and mental health disorders and proposes methods such as learning to see events through your child's own eyes, celebrating their strengths and achievements and recognising how others can help your child. Chapters deal with key topics such as coping with a diagnosis, discussing support needs with a child's teachers and explaining a child's differences to their peers, and the authors stress the importance of parents building support systems for themselves and their children. Real stories from parents and example scenarios illustrate the common difficulties faced by parents of children with special needs, and the authors explain how painful thoughts may be identified and reframed through techniques grounded in cognitive behaviour therapy. Crucially, Building a Joyful Life warns against parents neglecting their own needs, and a range of exercises to be completed by parents will help them to find ways of regaining balance in their lives.

Special Parent, Special Child

Special Parent, Special Child PDF Author: Tom Sullivan
Publisher: Tarcher
ISBN: 9780874778304
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
In Special Parent, Special Child, Tom Sullivan takes us inside the lives of parents who struggle daily to make a difference in the lives of their children with disabilities. It is a journey of parental hopes and dreams. Of heroism and disappointment. Of success and failure. Of unending trials and unpredictable rewards. From more than two hundred interviews, Sullivan chose six families who dramatically express the wide range of concerns confronting parents of children with disabilities. The parents speak openly and intimately about complex emotions, about working with and fighting against the medical, educational, and social service systems, developing ongoing relationships with professionals, handling the inevitable family repercussions, and maintaining strength and hope throughout as they seek the best life possible for their children. The spectrum of disability in this book - cerebral palsy, blindness, life-threatening illness, deafness, learning disability, and Down syndrome - brings to light an array of issues affecting parents. Even though each family's experience is unique, Special Parent, Special Child shows that there are common bonds and a common ground shared among these parents. They teach that when fate puts us in difficult situations, remarkable depths of courage and devotion arise in response. Their stories are a testimony to the quality and commitment of families throughout this country who are raising children with disabilities. The wisdom these parents share through the author, who is blind, will help all special parents to fulfill their challenging role.

More Heaven

More Heaven PDF Author: JoAnne White, PhD
Publisher: Outskirts Press
ISBN: 147876547X
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
Based on a true story, More Heaven is about six children with special needs and the remarkable teacher who gives them a chance at learning and life. Despite challenges and a lack of support, Miss Tina Randolph’s commitment to reach, teach, and inspire these children is unwavering. By accepting their uniqueness and participating in their private fantasy world, while at the same time engaging them in the real world, she eventually succeeds. Tina, her quick-witted teacher’s aide Kaye, and the children mount a tireless, daily battle to shift the tide toward the acceptance of people who are different. The experiment, begun in chaotic, uncharted waters, bridges the gap of understanding and paves the way for the inclusionary practices of education and society’s acceptance of children and adults with special needs. This is a road that continues to need paving, making the messages in More Heaven equally relevant today. The book evolved from an experiment in the Philadelphia school system in the late 1970s in response to the 1975 Education for the Handicapped Act, ruling that public schools in the US educate all children with disabilities, despite their severity. Previously, many of these special needs children were kept at home—isolated and denied access to the mainstream. More Heaven is a powerful story of compassion, determination, disappointment, triumph, and love.

Book Description
Yoga therapy is gaining rapid recognition as a form of treatment that can improve the physical and mental wellbeing of children with a variety of complex needs. This book contains a specially-designed yoga program for use with children of all abilities, and provides both parents and professionals with the knowledge they need to carry out the therapy themselves. The program consists of a series of postures, each of which is explained and accompanied by an illustration. The postures are designed to help children understand and use their bodies, and work towards positive changes such as realigning the spine, encouraging eye-contact, and promoting calm and steady breathing. Consideration is given to creating the right setting for carrying out the therapy, assessing an individual child's particular needs, and making the sessions fun using games and props. Sections on yoga therapy for specific conditions such as autistic spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy are included, and the book concludes with child and parent reports on how the program has worked for them, and a list of useful contacts and resources.
