Man of the World

Man of the World PDF Author: Travis L. Biller
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 9781490889825
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
When author Travis L. Biller was first called to be a pastor, he dreamed of winning people to Christ, of having the joy of seeing people grow in their faith, to be a part of mission trips, to experience love in the fellowship, to see the Book of Acts come alive in the church. But many of those dreams didn't materialize. Biller admits he was naïve about spiritual warfare and the conflict it can cause in the church. In Man of the World, he addresses the deep-rooted problem: churchgoers are influenced by a force bent on derailing God's work in the life of the church. Biller delves into the subject of Satan--his origin, character, and influence in the church. He discusses what the Bible teaches about Satan so we can better understand how he seeks to influence us. A study on how to gain victory against Satan and his schemes, Man of the World outlines the values of today that are a product of the spiritual influence that opposes God's truth, rule, and glory in one's life and in the life of the church. Biller encourages Christians to engage in spirit-filled self-evaluation to discern what spiritual influence holds sway in their lives.

The Possibility of Satan

The Possibility of Satan PDF Author: Alan McGill
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725266652
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Can we know that Satan exists as a particular, disembodied spirit? Current Catholic teaching insists that Satan exists as a person, a fallen angel who has instigated the Fall of humanity, continues to influence humans today, and constitutes a singular nemesis to God. How, one might ask, could human beings know such a thing with certainty? In response, this book seeks to rescue the mythical language in which the doctrine of Satan is rooted so that it is freed from the unreasonable expectation that it affirms the existence of a particular creature, and can instead express theological truth that is of relevance to all free-willed creatures. In doing so, it addresses thorny questions concerning the interpretation of Scripture, the relationship between God and evil, between doctrine and truth, between the Church and modernity, and between the condemnatory impulses apparent in Christian thought and the doctrine of an omnipresent God of infinite mercy. The book detects in the doctrine of Satan the expression of fundamental truths concerning the Creator-creature relationship—truths that are too easily obfuscated in current formulations that invite either fundamentalism or incredulity.

The Devil in the New World

The Devil in the New World PDF Author: Fernando Cervantes
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300068894
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Until the end of the eighteenth century, missionaries to the New World agreed that diabolism lay at the heart of the Native American belief system and at the root of their own failure to establish a church purged of Satan and pagan superstition. The Devil mattered, and he occupied a central place in discussions of all non-Christian religious systems and in the bitter disputes over how to combat them. In this elegant and sensitive analysis, Fernando Cervantes gives the Devil his due, illuminating a neglected aspect of the European encounter with America and setting the full history of the "spiritual conquest" in a rich and original context. He reveals how Native Americans reinterpreted the view of Christianity presented to them, how they refused to see the world as the missionaries saw it. Drawing on archival sources, he brings into clear focus the complex, often bewildering, and sometimes tragic clash between a theology that posited the existence of competing forces and one that insisted that all deities were multiform beings within which good and evil coexisted. He deals in compelling and persuasive detail with the social history of the interaction between the two cultures, explaining not only the impact of European ideas upon the New World but the influence of diabolism on the ideology of the Old. And he provides a subtle account of the role of diabolism in the emerging baroque culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that strikingly challenges conventional explanations of the growth of skepticism in the period.
