Excerpt from The Works of Beaumont Fletcher, Vol. 8 of 11: The Text Formed From a New Collation of the Early Editions; With Notes, and a Biographical Memoir This drama may be attributed, on sure grounds, to Fletcher alone; and the date of its first representation was doubtless 1621: see vol. vii. 415. In an account of "Revels and Playes performed and acted at Christmas in the Court at Whitehall, 1622," we find; "Upon Childermas daye no playe. Upon the Sonday following The Pilgrim was acted by the kings players." Malone's Shakespeare (by Boswell), iii.146. "The plot," observes Weber, "from internal evidence, seems to be borrowed from some Italian or Spanish novel." According to Langbaine (whose work is dated 1691), The Pilgrim "was reviv'd some years since, and a Prologue spoke, which the Reader may find in Covent-garden Drollery, p.12." Ace. of Engl. Dram. Poets, p.213. The Pilgrim, A Comedy: As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal, in DruryLane. Written Originally by Mr. Fletcher, and now very much Alter d, with several Additions [by Mr., afterwards Sir John, Vanbrugh]. Likewise A Prologue, Epilogue, Dialogue and Masque, Written by the late Great Poet Mr. Dryden, just before his Death, being the last of his Works, was printed in 1700, soon after it had been acted. "This comedy," says Baker, when revived about a dozen 1 years ago, together with the Secular Masque of Dryden, by the managers of Dr. Lane Theatre, tho very well, nay, in some of the Characters, very greatly performed, did not meet with the Applause it might reasonably have expected. The Companion to the Play house, &c. 1764. The Editors of 1778 inform us that "the play, with Vanbrugh's alterations, hath been performed at Covent-Garden Theatre within a very few years past." Excerpt from The Works of Beaumont Fletcher, Vol. 11 of 11: The d104 Formed From a New Collation of the Early; With Notes and a Biographical Memoir The editors agree in stating that this play, having been left imperfect by Fletcher, was finished by some other dramatist. But surely we may gather from the Prologue that the play had been completed by Fletcher (and perhaps that it had been acted during his life); and that The Lovers' Progress, as we now possess it, is Fletcher's play, with sundry additions and alterations made by another dramatist for a revival of the piece, a considerable time after Fletcher's death. The Editors of 1778 supposed that the second dramatist was Shirley. Weber thinks that the author in question was Massinger, observing that "the versification bears a much closer resemblance to that of Massinger" than of Shirley, and that "we may discover in the prologue and epilogue the very striking modesty of that amiable poet." Weber is perhaps right. Langbaine first remarked that "this play is built on a French Romance written by M. Daudiguier, call'd Lisander and Calista." Account of Eng. Dram. Poets, p. 211. The said romance was originally printed at Paris in 1015, without the name of the author (Hery D'audiguier), and entitled Histoire tragi-comique de notre temps. In the more recent editions it is called Histoire des Amours de Lysandre et de Caliste. It forms a volume of considerable size; and it contains such a crowd of incidents, that the following abridgment has been a difficult task. "Book I. In the reign of Henry the Great, there was a young Frenchman named Cleandre, of noble birth, rich, handsome, and distinguished for his valour and virtues. He enjoyed perfect happiness in his marriage with the beautiful and amiable Caliste, A young chevalier called Lysandre, whose courtesy and valour were not to be excelled, became violently enamoured of Caliste, and, for her sake, courted the acquaintance of her husband, who speedily conceived for him an ardent friendship. Lysandre, however, having no opportunity of declaring his passion to Caliste, pined away, and lost his health.
