A Woman of the Iron People PDF Author: Eleanor Arnason
Publisher: Open Road Media
ISBN: 1497605164
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 601

Book Description
This James Tiptree Jr. Award–winning anthropological science fiction novel about first contact with an alien culture is “fascinating” and “irresistible” (Ursula K. LeGuin). Lixia and the members of her human crew are determined not to disturb the life on the planet circling the Star Sigma Draconis which they have begun exploring. But the factions on the mother ship hovering above the planet may create an unintended chaos for both the life on the planet and the humans exploring it. As the anger increases on the ship, the ground crew becomes more and more affected by the conflict and begins to rely on their instincts to keep the project moving forward. Unexpected danger plagues the mission as Lixia is determined to expand her knowledge. This “excellent, anthropologically oriented SF tale” novel (Publishers Weekly) explores the mix of fear and fascination as humans and aliens meet, alert to the potential for both mutual enrichment and mutual destruction, and offers “strong characters, well-written dialogue, and a plot full of adventure” (School Library Journal).

“Masterful . . . absorbing. This finely written book gives us a whole new sense of Iran.”—The Washington Post Book World While doing research in the Iranian village of Deh Koh, Erika Friedl was able to quietly observe and record the cloistered lives of women in one of the strictest of all Muslim societies. In this fascinating book, Friedl recounts these women’s personal stories as they relate the strain of their daily activities, their intricate relationships with men, and their hopes, dreams, and fears. Women of Deh Koh is a rare and vivid look at what life is really like for the women of Iran. “Her intimate understanding of the life and customs of the village has made her confident about conveying her view from the inside. To share this view with us, and to comment quietly and wisely on the scene, is the striking and illuminating achievement of Women of Deh Koh.”—The New York Times Book Review

Making Virtuous Daughters and Wives

Making Virtuous Daughters and Wives PDF Author: June McDaniel
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791487652
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 145

Book Description
Exploring the folk religion of India and the role of girls and women within it, author June McDaniel focuses on the brata (vrata) ritual in which moral lessons are taught and goddesses are revealed. Bratas are performed to gain such goals as a healthy family, a good husband, and a happy life. They are also performed so that the performers (bratinis) develop such virtues as devotion, humility, and compassion. This book presents data from fieldwork, along with brata stories, songs, poems, and ritual activities. It discusses Bengali folk religion, offers an example of ritual worship in folk Hinduism, and surveys a variety of bratas. The author analyzes the similarities and differences among these rituals in low-caste village life and in high-caste Hindu tradition, and notes that the development of these rituals involves a form of continuing divine revelation with women as the primary transmitters. Bratas act to maintain traditional Hindu values, but also emphasize the power of women, whose virtues can save their husbands from hell worlds and their families from disasters.
