Not illustrated. 1854 edition. Excerpt: ... THE TURKISH SYSTEM OF FORTIFICATIONS ON THE THREE THEATRES OF WAR. To describe this syatem in a few words, we may compare it with a bastioned front. The Save and the Danube form the broad moat; the Servian Bosnian forest mountains, and the plateau-formed elevations of the Dobrudja, the projecting bastions; the course of the river at Widden and Hirsova, the flanks, ready to send armies into the rear of the enemy, as he attempts to cross the curtain between Rahova and Rassova; the Balkan furnishes the principal rampart, and the aforementioned chain of valleys on the southern base of the Balkan, enable the Turks to fall upon the enemy with undivided fresh troops, at the moment when he descends exhausted and in bad order from the rampart. If the important town of Adrianople were fortified, it would furnish the means of collecting in the basin of lower Thrace, so rich in resources, the remnants of a defeated army, to re-organize them, and once more to lead them against the enemy, or covered by the fortress, to retreat in good order upon Constantinople, and there strengthened by new armies and the troops of the capital, to make a powerful stand at the positions furnished by the Strandja Dagh, near the centre of the empire, to fight the decisive battle. Book Description
Part of the acclaimed "Special Campaign" series of works intended for serious professional students of military history each volume is interspersed with strategical and tactical comments and illustrated by numerous sketches. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877 was a quick but successful war initiated by Russia. It was one of the few offensive wars in which Russia had a unifying purpose. In this case, Russia was fighting to secure the rights of Armenians and Christians in the Muslim Ottoman Empire, who were victims of racist or religion based atrocities. There were several major battles in the war, but it was a fairly swift victory for Russia.
