Book Description
Excerpt from The Utilization of Fuel in Locomotive Practice In the fall of 1906 the locomotive - testing laboratory of Purdue University, at Lafayette, Ind., entered on a series of tests, one purpose of which was to determine in precise terms the degree of efficiency with which a modern high-class American locomotive utilizes the heat energy of the fuel supplied to it. The general interest in the subject, the elaborate plans which had been formu lated for conducting the work, and the substantial character of the support which had been pledged to maintain it justified the Geological Survey in aiding the investigation. The cooperation of the Survey consisted in detailing experts to assist the regular staff of the labora tory in the chemical and calorific work of the tests. These experts, working under the general supervision of the director of the Purdue laboratory, became responsible for the sampling of smoke-box gases, of the fuel used, of the Cinders caught in the front end, of the sparks discharged by the stack, and of the refuse caught in the ash pan. The gas analyses were made by them at the university laboratory. The analyses of all solid samples and the calorific tests of the fuels were made at the government fuel-testing plant at St. Louis. The representatives of the Survey were not concerned with other phases of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Locomotive Operation

Locomotive Operation PDF Author: G. R. Henderson
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780656062973
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 552

Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotive Operation: A Technical and Practical Analysis The object of this work is to give a complete and systematic discussion of the theory and practice of locomotive operation. By this is meant the work or results accomplished by a loco motive in motion, together with the effect upon itself and the track, and the amount of fuel and water needed to perform such work, rather than an exclusive treatise upon the mere manipulation of the machine, though the latter naturally forms a part of the study in connection with the proper manner of procuring certain results. The order in which the different conditions are taken up is somewhat at variance with the usual custom. Inertia is first considered, as this property is inherent in all bodies having motion of a variable character. The Action of the Steam is next examined in detail, as to its power of producing rotation and strains in the various members of the mechanism. Resistance naturally follows, as it must be overcome by the action of the steam. This leads us to Slipping and Braking, which are the logical outcome of the previous studies. These prepare us for an examination of the Hauling Power at slow speeds, but in order to consider high speeds, the steam capacity of the boiler must be determined, which is first under taken. As the principal business of the locomotive is to haul trains, this is the most important chapter of the treatise, and it is placed in this part of the work, so that the various factors by which it is governed might be studied in an elementary man ner before the complication necessary for a complete under standing of it is encountered. After this follow determinations of the water and fuel consumption under different conditions, and their economical use. Book Description
Excerpt from How Oil Is Used for Fuel on Locomotives: Supplement to the Science of Railways Generally speaking, the oil is brought to the surface by means of pumping from wells; in some instances, however, the supply is so abnud ant that the wells have a natural flow; some times also it is found oozing from the crevices of rocks or floating on the surface of water. Book Description
Excerpt from Oil Fuel Equipment for Locomotives and Principles of Application This little publication is intended chiefly for the use of locomotive superintendents and Others who have the control of railway engines using oil as fuel. It is entirely of a practical character, and the few references to theory and principles of combustion are necessary in order that the subject may be clearly understood. Those who wish to study the historical, theoretical and chemical sides must have recourse to the many scientific text-books on Petroleum and Oil Fuel.
