The Tamer Tamed

The Tamer Tamed PDF Author: John Fletcher
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1408143801
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
The Tamer Tamed is the subtitle or alternative title to John Fletcher's The Woman's Prize, a comedic sequel and reply to The Taming of the Shrew. The plot switches the gender roles of Shakespeare's play: the women seek to tame the men. Katherine (the "shrew" of the original) has died, and Petruchio takes a second wife, Maria. Maria denounces her former mildness and vows not to sleep with Petruchio until she "turn him and bend him as [she] list, and mold him into a babe again." After many comedic exchanges and plot twists, Petruchio is finally "tamed" in the eyes of Maria, and the play ends with the two reconciled. The play is seen to reflect how society's views of women, femininity, and "domestic propriety" were beginning to change. It is said that Fletcher wrote this play to attract Shakespeare's attention - the two went on to collaborate on at least three plays together. This brand new New Mermaid edition offers unique and fresh insight into the critical interpretation of the play. It builds on current critical foundations (the relationship with Taming of the Shrew, gender relations etc) and suggests different areas of interest (popular associations of the shrew, the question of reputation, and a re-examination of the play's structure). as well as examining stage history and recent productions.

Ignoble Displacement

Ignoble Displacement PDF Author: Stephanie Polsky
Publisher: John Hunt Publishing
ISBN: 178279879X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
We live in a time of great social, political and economic crisis that many date to the collapse of the global banking system in 2008. Many are finding it difficult to contextualise the hardships that have taken place in the years following on from those events. It is difficult to find the answers in our present media landscape, or in a political and intellectual climate that continues to laud capitalism as the winning economic system coming out of both World War II and the end of the Cold War, which has become over the last century synonymous with democracy itself. The irony is that in our times the majority of the world’s people feel disenfranchised by both capitalism and democracy. How did we come to this historical juncture? What can we learn not just from history, but from our cultural artefacts that might tell us how we first came to conduct ourselves within a system of global finance capitalism? This volume proposes that we reinterpret the writings of Charles Dickens to find the antecedents of our present situation with regards to capital, empire and subjectivity.

Book Description
Flynn When an injury puts paid to my professional fighting career, I retreat to my hometown to lick my wounds. Angry and bitter at the loss of the only thing I've ever known, I withdraw from the world, becoming as cold and aloof as the Colorado mountains that surround my home. But then I discover the one thing I want more than fighting. I know I have to make some changes - and I'm going to need help from my prim and proper neighbor. Molly No one is more surprised than me when Flynn Black - my grumpy, reclusive neighbor - comes to me with an unusual request. He’s decided he needs help becoming more ... civilized, and that I'm is just the woman for the job. Flynn is coarse and foul-mouthed, yet there's something about the prickly ex-fighter that intrigues me. He's a challenge I can't resist. I think my privileged upbringing has prepared me for anything, but it never prepared me for my growing feelings for the surprisingly sensitive man who lurks beneath Flynn's hard exterior - a man I know can never be mine.
