Elliott also praises Say's work on conchology published in the Journal of the Natural Academy of Sciences. The verso contains a draft response from Say, cataloging the specimens and providing notes on their characteristics and whether they were unknown to him, such as the genera Bulimulus and Lymnaea.

Correspondence from Stephen Elliott to John Torrey, dated 1818-1823. With long gaps between letters, Elliott apologizes for not writing sooner, delayed by ill health and outside commitments, and thanks Torrey for packages of plants and mineral specimens. He discusses Torrey's book projects and his own-- the two men exchange copies of their work along with specimens-- and complains of the lack of fellow botanists in Charleston and the tediousness of corresponding with Europe, with delays of up to a year between letters. Elliott includes "wish lists" of plant and mineral specimens in two of his letters, and confesses that if he was living in an area with more minerals, he might have favored them over plants.
