Book Description
This book attempts to make a contribution to the New Testament doctrine of the Spirit, with special reference to the paraclete problem. Dr Johnston begins with the use of the word 'spirit' in the Gospel of John and treats it as primarily 'impersonal'. It denotes divine power or energy. God acts by his spirit, both to create and to redeem. The Fourth Evangelist shows Jesus as the incarnate Word, a man uniquely inspired, whose absence after death is compensated for by an outburst of spiritual powers in his Church. The paraclete is representative of God or of Christ, and the Johannine teaching is that no angelmediator, no holy 'spirit' like the Archangel Michael, can take Christ's place. But truly inspired leaders - acting as teachers, exegetes, martyrs - and the inspired Church itself as a communion of love do embody the spirit-paraclete and do continue to represent Jesus. Special attention is paid to recent research on this subject, mainly in the area of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dr Johnston argues that in insisting that the true spirit-paraclete must always exalt and interpret Jesus of Nazareth as the final revelation of God in man, John was in fact combating heretical views.

The Spirit-Paraclete in the Testament of Jesus According to Saint John's Gospel

The Spirit-Paraclete in the Testament of Jesus According to Saint John's Gospel PDF Author: Revi John Mathews

Book Description
The Johannine community evolved through three main stages: the initial period when the community developed its own identity based on its christology, the second phase when it separated from Judaism and established itself as a separate community, and the Diaspora and eventual disintegration. A comparison of these phases with a theoretical paradigm of a sect's development indicates that the Johannine community bears all the distinguishing marks of a sect. Despite the community's sectarian approach, the Paraclete's tempering of its perspective is what accounts for the universal and enduring appeal of the Fourth Gospel.

Spirit in the Writings of John

Spirit in the Writings of John PDF Author: Tricia Gates Brown
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567139204
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
Tricia Gates Brown employs the methodology of socio-scientific biblical criticism to investigate the pneumatology of John and 1 John. She argues that the meaning of spirit in John and 1 John is best understood using the anthropological model of brokerage. The model of patronage and its relevance to the socio-cultural world of John's gospel is also discussed. Spirit in the Writings of John examines the development in pneumatology between John and 1 John and analyzes what this suggests about the socio-cultural context of the Johannine community. There is a discussion of the meaning of the term paracletos in literature antedating John, and the dominant view that the word was a formal forensic term is challenged.

John's Gospel

John's Gospel PDF Author: Ralph F. Wilson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780996202503
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
The Gospel written by the Beloved Disciple St. Augustine once said about the Gospel of John, that, "It is shallow enough for a child not to drown, yet deep enough for an elephant to swim in it." John contains the Bible's favorite verse - John 3:16. John's themes are essential to our understanding of Jesus as Son of God and Messiah. Here we learn about the Holy Spirit, the Counselor who lives within us to guide and empower us. We learn about the Father's love and eternal life. Some of the most beloved stories of Jesus' ministry are found only in the Fourth Gospel -- changing the water into wine, the woman at the well, the woman taken in adultery, raising Lazarus, washing the disciples' feet, and many more. In John's Gospel you find Jesus as the Bread of Life; the Light of the World; the Good Shepherd; the Way, the Truth, and the Life. John's Gospel is lengthy - 21 chapters, but rich and deep. Each chapter concludes with a summary of lessons for disciples to ponder. This study's helpful thought and discussion questions make it useful for personal enrichment and by small groups and classes. Extensive research contained in the footnotes makes it a goldmine for teachers and a boon to preachers involved in sermon preparation.
