For Whom the Poem Tolls

Book Description
Alexander Pope said, True ease in writing comes from art, not chance. Poetry, is an intriguing art, it absolves the mind from its complex cognitive structured web, yet it asks for a concise, fully- mature output. I find it unbelievably true that most poetry stream from an unconscious state of consciousness; I struggled with this concept for a long time, until I gave up, or did I? Poetry also tends to flow unexpectedly, although it leaves mirthfulness in the heart of the poet yet occasionally it ignites doubt, which leads to diffidence. Nevertheless, no pain no gain. On the same hand, expectation is the mother of all surprises: yes, it is true to me, that the more I expect from a poem the more I find myself dazzled by its own unpredictability. On the other hand, the poet is a mere adventurer like the reader I might add, who, if I may, is subjected to this unconsciousness, but the noble obligation of the one is what brings forth the gratefulness of the other. However, unlike the reader, who is only responsible for his taste, the poet is whom everyone envies and the measure by which he is characterized and sometimes penalized, is envy itself.

Dark Testament: and Other Poems
Author: Pauli Murray
Publisher: Liveright Publishing
ISBN: 1631494848
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 110
Book Description
With the cadences of Martin Luther King Jr. and the lyricism of Langston Hughes, the great civil rights activist Pauli Murray’s sole book of poems finally returns to print. There has been explosive interest in the life of Pauli Murray, as reflected in a recent profile in The New Yorker, the publication of a definitive biography, and a new Yale University college in her name. Murray has been suddenly cited by leading historians as a woman who contributed far more to the civil rights movement than anyone knew, being arrested in 1940—fifteen years before Rosa Parks—for refusing to give up her seat on a Virginia bus. Celebrated by twenty-first-century readers as a civil rights activist on the level of King, Parks, and John Lewis, she is also being rediscovered as a gifted writer of memoir, sermons, and poems. Originally published in 1970 and long unavailable, Dark Testament and Other Poems attests to her fierce lyrical powers. At turns song, prayer, and lamentation, Murray’s poems speak to the brutal history of slavery and Jim Crow and the dream of racial justice and equality.

Beowulf An Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem
Author: J. Lesslie Hall
Publisher: Phoemixx Classics Ebooks
ISBN: 3985946000
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
Beowulf An Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem J. Lesslie Hall - Point out the place: he passed then unwillinglyTo the spot where he knew of the notable cavern, The cave under earth, not far from the ocean,The anger of eddies, which inward was full of Jewels and wires: a warden uncanny, Warrior weaponed, wardered the treasure, Old under earth; no easy possession For any of earth-folk access to get to. Then the battle-brave atheling sat on the naze-edge, While the gold-friend of Geatmen gracious saluted His fireside-companions: woe was his spirit, Death-boding, wavring; Weird very near him, Who must seize the old hero, his soul-treasure look for, Dragging aloof his life from his body: Not flesh-hidden long was the folk-leaders spirit. Beowulf spake, Ecgtheows son:It is the devout desire of this translator to hasten the day when the story of Beowulf shall be as familiar to English-speaking peoples as that of the Iliad. Beowulf is our first great epic. It is an epitomized history of the life of the Teutonic races. It brings vividly before us our forefathers of pre-Alfredian eras, in their love of war, of sea, and of adventure. My special thanks are due to Professors Francis A. March and James A. Harrison, for advice, sympathy, and assistance.
