Book Description
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) expresses a fundamental morality in the way a company behaves toward society. It follows ethical behavior toward stakeholders and recognizes the spirit of the legal and regulatory environment. The idea of CSR gained momentum in the late 1950s and 1960s with the expansion of large conglomerate corporations and became a popular subject in the 1980s with R. Edward Freeman's Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach and the many key works of Archie B. Carroll, Peter F. Drucker, and others. In the wake of the financial crisis of 2008–2010, CSR has again become a focus for evaluating corporate behavior. First published in 1953, Howard R. Bowen’s Social Responsibilities of the Businessman was the first comprehensive discussion of business ethics and social responsibility. It created a foundation by which business executives and academics could consider the subjects as part of strategic planning and managerial decision-making. Though written in another era, it is regularly and increasingly cited because of its relevance to the current ethical issues of business operations in the United States. Many experts believe it to be the seminal book on corporate social responsibility. This new edition of the book includes an introduction by Jean-Pascal Gond, Professor of Corporate Social Responsibility at Cass Business School, City University of London, and a foreword by Peter Geoffrey Bowen, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver, who is Howard R. Bowen's eldest son.

The Social Responsibilities Of Business

Book Description
The concept of the social responsibility of business has roots in the Puritan doctrine of stewardship as well as the nineteenth-century "gospel of wealth," but business leaders only began to consider community welfare as a whole in the context of their corporate aspirations of the latter half of the twentieth century. Originally appearing in 1970, The Social Responsibilities of Business surveys the history of corporate actions in pursuit of social responsibility, and attempts to assess likely developments. Reissued in 1988 by Transaction with a new introduction by the author and now available in paperback, the volume provides Morrell Heald the opportunity to evaluate his earlier predictions and identify prospects for further development in the area of corporate social responsibility. Some of Heald's predictions have not yet come to fruition, and he reflects upon the reasons. No effective structure yet exists to permit an open exchange of views and needs between business and representatives of its various constituencies. In addition, two of Heald's earlier suggestions have not taken root in the way he anticipated--the company foundation, and the corporate social audit--and he assesses why they have not, and what opportunities they still provide. The Social Responsibilities of Business provides essential background for understanding the developing social role of the corporation and for assessing its future direction. "[A] well-documented study that reflects a careful choice of source materials. The author's judgments are sober, balanced, and objectiveà . A genuine contribution to deeper understanding of America's social conscience in the twentieth century."--Gerald D. Nash, Journal of American History Morrell Heald is Samuel B. and Virginia C. Knight Professor of Humanities at Case Western Reserve University. He is also the author of Transatlantic Vistas: American Journalists in Europe, 1900-1940.

The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty

The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty PDF Author: Peter Collier
Publisher: Plunkett Lake Press
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en

Book Description
This is the story of an American dynasty: the father, who built the fortune, the son who cleansed the name, the brothers who manipulated both the name and the fortune to their own ends, and the cousins who often wish they had inherited neither. Cast against the backdrop of America’s history is a spectacular array of characters: a bigamist, a robber baron, a philanthropist, a world-weary cynic, a drifting divorcee, polluters, environmentalists, art lovers and money manipulators. “[An] absorbing history of the Rockefeller family... a swiftly paced, extensively researched work of social history, a tale of family tensions and neuroses, of successes and failures in private and in public, all of it unfolding against a backdrop of money, influence and power.” — Steven R. Weisman, The New York Times “[A]n exceptionally good book” — John Kenneth Galbraith, The New York Review of Books “[Collier and Horowitz] present a sensitive family biography, more wistful than angry, more concerned with the impact of immense wealth on individual personality than on society. The authors received special access to the Rockefeller family archives.” — Gaddis Smith, Foreign Affairs “A startling tale emerges, shattering all we know and believe about the Rockefellers, destroying the legend brutally with significant revelations and — yet — winning a depth of sympathy for Rockefellers which three generations of PR men have not been able to manufacture.” — William Greider, Washington Post Book World “A skillful portrait of great wealth... A vast sweep of world-shaping episodes, dates and names.” — The Houston Chronicle “Impressive and intelligent... skillfully organized and presented so that it matters — not only to those curious about Rockefellers but to anyone curious about money and power in our society.” — Newsweek
