The Staging of Drama in the Medieval Church PDF Author: Dunbar H. Ogden
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
Using original rubrics from some 1,200 manuscripts, this book demonstrates performance of the liturgical drama from the tenth through the sixteenth centuries. It lays out the staging space and traces the movements of the performers on architectural ground plans. The rubrics reveal a wealth of information about the creating of character through ecclesastical vestments and other costumes. It also includes a surprising range of directives for voice, gesture, and dumb show. The book provides a major theatrical source book for students and scholars in the field of drama.

To Touch Or Not to Touch?

To Touch Or Not to Touch? PDF Author: Reimund Bieringer
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
To Touch or Not to Touch? Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Noli me tangere is based on studies which were originally written for an interdisciplinary conference entitled Noli me tangere. Word - Image - Context. The book contains eight contributions by internationally recognized specialists in the areas of philosophy (Marc De Kesel), exegesis (Esther de Boer, Erika Mohri, Turid Karlsen Seim and Reimund Bieringer), art history (Lisa Marie Rafanelli and Victor Schmidt) and literature studies (Hedwig Schwall). The collection is unique in its focus on the Noli me tangere and in its interdisciplinary nature. The narrowness of its subject, namely the prohibition of touch by the risen Christ addressed to Mary Magdalene is counterbalanced by the broadness of methodologies and approaches which are used to treat the subject. The book mirrors the many ways in which interpreters have wrestled with the topics of touch and its prohibition in the interpretation of noli me tangere in John 20:17.

The Liturgy of the Medieval Church

The Liturgy of the Medieval Church PDF Author: Thomas Heffernan
Publisher: Medieval Institute Publications
ISBN: 1580445039
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 734

Book Description
This volume seeks to address the needs of teachers and advanced students who are preparing classes on the Middle Ages or who find themselves confounded in their studies by reference to the various liturgies that were fundamental to the lives of medieval peoples. In a series of essays, scholars of the liturgy examine The Shape of the Liturgical Year, Particular Liturgies, The Physical Setting of the Liturgy, The Liturgy and Books, and Liturgy and the Arts. A concluding essay, which originated in notes left behind by the late C. Clifford Flanigan, seeks to open the field, to examine liturgy within the larger and more inclusive category of ritual. The essays are intended to be introductory but to provide the basic facts and the essential bibliography for further study. They approach particular problems assuming a knowledge of medieval Europe but little expertise in liturgical studies per se.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sepulchre of Christ in Art and Liturgy: With Special Reference to the Liturgic Drama Representations of the sepulchre of Christ occur in art from the fourth century on.1 They began after Christianity had emerged from the cata combs and become a state religion under Constantine. In the painting of the catacombs the death and the resurrection of Christ were not de picted, although probably symbolically suggested by the resurrection of Lazarus. This Lazarus scene, with its little gabled temple tomb, was the most popular of all New Testament subjects in catacumbal art. The sepulchre of Christ appears in scenes of the Entombment, of the Holy Women at the Sepulchre, of Christ's Appearance to Mary Magdalene, and, at a comparatively late period, in the Resurrection scene. Through out the earlier centuries, the most frequent and most important of these scenes is that of the Holy Women at the Sepulchre, and it is chiefly in connection with this that the forms of the sepulchre in art will be traced.
