Book Description
Excerpt from The Senses and the Intellect While endeavouring to present in a methodical form all the important facts and doctrines bearing upon mind, considered as a branch of science, I have seen reason to adopt some new Views, and to depart in a few instances from the most usual arrangement of the topics. Conceiving that the time has now come when many of the striking discoveries of Physiologists relative to the nervous system should find a re cognised place in the Science of Mind, I have devoted a separate chapter to the Physiology of the Brain and Nerves. Handbook of Psychology, Senses and Intellect (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: James Mark Baldwin

Book Description
Excerpt from Handbook of Psychology, Senses and Intellect The justification of another handbook of Psychology is readily found in the present state of the science, a state of such enthusiastic and productive specialism that it is to be hoped no book will hereafter meet the require ments of higher education for more than a generation. Whatever labor this may entail upon mental scientists and educators, whose business it is to systematize and present results as they are established, they should be the first to hail with joy the rapid growth of psychology as of immediate advantage to the philosophy and prac tice of education. But apart from the facts of the science itself - the new facts which must be interpreted in a system for educational purposes - I think it is exceedingly neces sary that new philosophical conceptions of the sphere and function of psychology should be embodied in Special works. This is the more imperative at present, since the conception now prevalent is widely different from that of twenty years ago, when many of the works were written which are yet used as introduction and strong support to the philosophy taught in the universi ties: the new conception, namely, that psychology is a science of fact, its questions are questions of fact, and that the treatment of hypotheses must be as rigorous and critical as competent scientists are accustomed to demand in other departments of research. Book Description
Excerpt from Intellect Our spontaneous action is always the best. You cannot, with your best deliberation and heed, come so close to any question as your spontaneous glanoe shall bring you, whilst you rise from your bed, or walk abroad in the morning after medita ting the matter before sleep, 011 the previous night. Always our thinking is a pious reception. Out truth of thought is therefore vitiated as much by too violent direction given by our will, as by too great negligence. We do not determine what we will think. We only open our senses, clear away, as we can, all obstruction from the fact, and suffer the intellect to see. We have little control over our thoughts. We are the prisoners of ideas. They catch us up for moments into their heaven, and so fully engage us, that we take no thought for the morrow, gaze like children, without an effort to make them our own. By-and-by we fall out of that rapture, bethink us where we have been, what we have seen, and repeat, as truly as we can, what we have beheld. As far as we can recall these ecstasies, we carry away in the inef faceable memory, the result, and all men and all the ages confirm it. It is called Truth. But the moment we cease to report, and attempt to correct and contrive, it is not truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Senses and the Mind, Vol. 3 The densities of bodies are proportional to their masses, divided by their volumes. Hence, if the sun and planets be assumed to be spheres, their volumes will be as the cubes of their diameters. Now, the apparent dia meters of the sun and earth, at their mean distance, are 8, and 1552, and the mass of the earth is the 354,936th part of that of the sun, taken as the unit. It follows, there fore, that the earth is nearly four times as dense as the sun; but the sun is so large that his attractive force would cause bodies to fall through about 335 feet in consequently, if inhabited by human beings, they would be unable to move, since their weight would be thirty times as great as it is here. Aman of moderate size would weigh about two tons at the surface of the sun; whereas, at the surface of the asteroids, (the clusters between Mars and Jupiter, ) he would be so light that he could not stand steadily, since he would only weigh a few pounds. The densities, that of water being 1, as far as can be satisfactorily explained, are as fol low -sun, 1123 Mercury, Venus.
