11th Conference on British and American Studies

11th Conference on British and American Studies PDF Author: Marinela Burada
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443872911
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 475

Book Description
The present volume includes a selection of twenty-nine papers by academics, and senior and junior researchers who came together within the framework of the 11th Conference on British and American Studies. Structured into three sections, the contributions included here display a wide array of topics and methodologies illustrating a variety of scholarly pursuits and approaches. These, in their turn, reflect the issues which constitute the complex nature of language and culture, and their mutual relationship. The authors’ interests encompass aspects related to the structural and rhetorical organization of languages approached both individually and cross-linguistically; first and second language acquisition; issues of translation and rendering considered from linguistic and cultural perspectives; and the cultural construction of meaning and identity as reflected in literature and art.

Drawing the Boundaries of Meaning

Drawing the Boundaries of Meaning PDF Author: Betty J. Birner
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027230900
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
One of the most lively and contentious issues in contemporary linguistic theory concerns the elusive boundary between semantics and pragmatics, and Professor Laurence R. Horn of Yale University has been at the center of that debate ever since his groundbreaking 1972 UCLA dissertation. This festvolume in honor of Horn brings together the best of current work at the semantics/pragmatics boundary from a neo-Gricean perspective. Featuring the contributions of 22 leading researchers, it includes papers on implicature (Kent Bach), inference (Betty Birner), presupposition (Barbara Abbott), lexical semantics (Georgia Green, Sally McConnell-Ginet, Steve Kleinedler & Randall Eggert), negation (Pauline Jacobson, Frederick Newmeyer, Scott Schwenter), polarity (Donka Farkas, Anastasia Giannakidou, Michael Israel), implicit variables (Greg Carlson & Gianluca Storto), definiteness (Barbara Partee), reference (Ellen Prince, Andrew Kehler & Gregory Ward), and logic (Jerrold Sadock, Francis Jeffry Pelletier & Andrew Hartline). These original papers represent not only a fitting homage to Larry Horn, but also an important contribution to semantic and pragmatic theory.

13th Conference on British and American Studies PDF Author: Marinela Burada
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443874795
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
This volume brings together a selection of papers in linguistics presented at the 13th edition of the Conference on British and American Studies. Structured into three chapters, the studies included here are illustrative for the different perspectives, methodologies, and research traditions in the investigation of language-related phenomena. The first chapter, “Language Change and Cross-Linguistic Analysis”, is mainly concerned with the external and internal catalysts for language change, and with a number of morphosyntactic and semantic particularities of Romanian, set in contrast with other languages. Aspects related to first or second language learning and language as an instrument of thought form the content of the second chapter, “Language Acquisition, Teaching and Processing”. The focus of the final chapter, “Pragmatics, Translation, and the Negotiation of Meaning”, is language as an instrument of power and (self-)communication.

A Reference Grammar of Romanian

A Reference Grammar of Romanian PDF Author: Carmen Dobrovie-Sorin
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027271356
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 930

Book Description
Based on recent research in formal linguistics, this volume provides a thorough description of the whole system of Romanian Noun Phrases, understood in an extended sense, that is, in addition to nouns, pronouns and determiners, it examines all the adnominal phrases: genitive-marked DPs, adjectives, relative clauses, appositions, prepositional phrases, complement clauses and non-finite modifiers. The book focuses on syntax and the syntax-semantics interface but also includes a systematic morphological description of the language. The implicitly comparative description of Romanian contained in the book can serve as a starting point for the study of the syntax/semantics of Noun Phrases in other languages, regardless of whether or not they are typologically related to Romanian. This book will be of special interest to linguists working on Romanian, Romance languages, comparative linguistics and language typology, especially because Romanian is relevant for comparative linguistics not only as a Romance language, but also as part of the so-called Balkan Sprachbund.

Non-definiteness and Plurality

Non-definiteness and Plurality PDF Author: Svetlana Vogeleer
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027233594
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
This collection of studies by leading scholars in the field focuses on the semantics of non-definite (bare and indefinite) plural NPs. The contributions in the first part concentrate on bare plurals and their cross-linguistic counterparts. They discuss applicability of the notion of 'semantic incorporation' to bare plurals by contrasting them to bare singulars, with the aim of accounting for the interaction between the semantics of number and the degree of (in)dependency of the NP with respect to the verb. The articles in the second part examine the relationship between the semantics of number and the semantics of aspect. The contributions in the third part concentrate on non-definite numerical noun phrases by addressing a range of fundamental questions such as: the semantics of indefinite time-phrases, numericals in classifier- and non-classifier languages, scope interactions, the at least- and exactly-readings, referential properties of numericals. The volume will be welcomed by linguists interested in the semantics of number in non-definite NPs.

Epistemic Indefinites

Epistemic Indefinites PDF Author: Luis Alonso-Ovalle
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 019966529X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
This book examines the semantics and pragmatics of determiners or pronouns that signal ignorance on the part of the speaker, such as Spanish algun. It offers novel empirical observations and important theoretical insights on epistemic indefinites and related topics such as modal free relatives, modified numerals, and epistemic modals.

The Grammar of Choice

The Grammar of Choice PDF Author: Paula Menendez-Benito
Publisher: Booksurge Publishing
ISBN: 9781419663116
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This dissertation investigates the semantics of universal Free Choice (FC) items i.e., items like FC 'any' or Spanish 'cualquiera'. This study is relevant for the theory of quantification. One of the core questions of this research is: what is the range of quantificational constructions used in natural language? Investigating the behavior of FC items will be instrumental in answering this question. While FC items seem to express quantification, they do not behave like 'textbook' quantifiers: They have a restricted distribution, and they seem to have a special relationship with modality.

Plurals and Events

Plurals and Events PDF Author: Barry Schein
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 9780262193344
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
Barry Schein proposes combining a second-order treatment of plurals with Donald Davidson's suggestion that there are positions for reference to events in ordinary predicates in order to account for several of the more puzzling features of plurals without invoking plural objects, with its attendant metaphysics, and also provide an absolute truth-theoretic characterization of the semantics of sentences with plurals in them. How do we make sense of sentences with plural noun phrases in them? In Plurals and Events, Barry Schein proposes combining a second-order treatment of plurals with Donald Davidson's suggestion that there are positions for reference to events in ordinary predicates in order to account for several of the more puzzling features of plurals without invoking plural objects, with its attendant metaphysics, and also provide an absolute truth-theoretic characterization of the semantics of sentences with plurals in them. Schein's highly original argument should have significant impact on how natural-language semantics is done, with repercussions for philosophy and logic. The book opens with foundational arguments that the logical language should have four major features: reduction to singular predication via a Davidsonian logical form, amereology of events, a logical syntax that allows the constituents of a Davidsonian analysis to be predicated of distinct events and separated from one another by other logical elements, and descriptive anaphors that cross-refer to the events described by antecedent clauses. A semantics for plurality and quantification is developed in the remaining chapters, which address some of the empirical and formal questions raised by the variety of interpretations in which plurals and quantifiers participate.

Combinatory Linguistics

Combinatory Linguistics PDF Author: Cem Bozsahin
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 311029687X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
The book examines to what extent the mediating relation between constituents and their semantics can arise from combinatory knowledge of words. It traces the roots of Combinatory Categorial Grammar, and uses the theory to promote a Humean question in linguistics and cognitive science: Why do we see limited constituency and dependency in natural languages, despite their diversity and potential infinity? A potential answer is that constituents and dependencies might have arisen from a single resource: adjacency. The combinatory formulation of adjacency constrains possible grammars.
