Scintillation Effects in Superfluid Helium

Scintillation Effects in Superfluid Helium PDF Author: Frank L. Hereford

Pages : 9

Book Description
The program of research with which this report is concerned is an outgrowth of the discovery several years ago that the scintillation of He 2, produced by charged particles, is influenced markedly by the superfluid properties of the liquid. During the ensuing period the program has involved continued experimental studies of the anomalous He 2 scintillation process, the achievement of an understanding of the effect, and study of some unexpected phenomena which have been discovered relating to heat transport in He 2. Recombination Luminescence in the Scintillation of Normal and Superfluid Liquid Helium

Recombination Luminescence in the Scintillation of Normal and Superfluid Liquid Helium PDF Author: Frank L. HEREFORD

Book Description
The alpha-particle-induced scintillation of liquid helium has been studied experimentally in the temperature range 1.23 to 4.2K with an electric field (9 to 43 kV/cm) applied in the region of the alpha tracks. Simultaneously with observation of the scintillation intensity, the ion current extracted from the alpha tracks by the field was measured. The results indicate that recombination luminescence accounts for approximately 60% of the total scintillation intensity (with zero electric field) and that this component of the intensity is temperature-independent. However, the ion current extracted by the field and the corresponding reduction in scintillation intensity both have temperature dependences which exhibit anomalous behavior in the He II region. Reflections on Liquid Helium

Reflections on Liquid Helium PDF Author: E.L. Andronikashvili
Publisher: American Institute of Physics
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
In this book of reminiscences, this prize-winning Russian physicist presents a sweeping discourse on scientific achievement from the thirties to the present day. On the basis of his own work and that of leading international scientists such as P. L. Kapitza, L. Landau, R. Feynman and J. Bardeen, the author recounts the establishment and development of the superfluidity of liquid helium and quantum hydrodynamics. In an interesting and readable style, E. L. Andronikashvili speaks of the scientific quest and the human interrelationships that accompany scientific creativity. For historians of science and physicists.
