Book Description
Excerpt from The Scientific Results of the Exhibition It would have been a congenial task to me to describe here some of the rare specimens of great interest to the zoologist, which have been sent by foreign countries to this exhibition, such specimens as Nordenskjold's Phytina and the magnificent skeletons of Ziphioid Whales shown in the Swedish court are of surpassing interest and importance from the zoological point of view. At the same time it must be admitted that they do not have any special importance in relation to Fisheries, and accordingly I must leave unnoticed such rarities and delights of the zoologist, in order to address myself more especially to the question of the relationship of the science of zoology to the fish industry. The value of zoological science in relation to fisheries is not, I think, so fully appreciated in this country as is desirable in. the interests of the public, and of those who make profit by enterprise in fisheries. There is a very general tendency among men whose occupations are of a commercial character to undervalue the work of scientific inquiry, not only in regard to such matters as fisheries and fish-culture, but also in relation to manufacturing industries, agriculture, mining, and even in relation to medicine. To a large extent this arises from a misconception as to the real nature and character of what is called "science." Book Description
Excerpt from Contributions to the Centennial Exhibition The Commissioners of the Centennial Exhibition having omitted to invite me to exhibit the results of my labors connected with mechanics and physics, a gap in their re cord of material progress exceeding one-third of a century has been occasioned. I have therefore deemed it proper to publish a statement of my principal labors during the last third of the century, the achievements of which the promoters of the Centennial Exhibition have called upon the civilized world to recognize. Studies, Vol. 2 of 2

Studies, Vol. 2 of 2 PDF Author: Alfred Russel Wallace

Book Description
Excerpt from Studies, Vol. 2 of 2: Scientific Social Public museums of natural objects being such entirely modern institutions, we can hardly wonder that no generally accepted principles have yet been laid down for their construction or arrangement. They most frequently originated with private collectors, Whose plan was naturally followed in their enlargement; and when they outgrew their original domicile, an architect was called in, who, according to his special tastes, designed a temple or a palace for their reception. However inconvenient or un suitable the original mode of exhibition might turn out, or however ill adapted to its purpose the new building might prove, it would, of course, be exceedingly difficult and expensive to alter either Of them, more especially as the modified plan might be found, after trial, to have defects as great as that which it replaced. Two eminent naturalists, Sir Joseph Hooker and the late Dr. J. E. Gray, both connected with great public museums, have made suggestions towards a more rational system and as it is evident that museums will increase, and may be made an important agent in national education and the elevation of the masses of the people, it seems advisable that the subject Should be brought forward for popular discussion. Accepting as a basis the few essential principles that seem now to be agreed upon, I propose to follow them out into some rather important details. Evaluation Techniques for Interpretation

Evaluation Techniques for Interpretation PDF Author: J. Alan Wagar

Book Description
Excerpt from Evaluation Techniques for Interpretation: Study Results From an Exhibition on Energy The theme for the 1973 summer special was Energy and Its Relation to Man and the Environment. This Energy Special was set up in the Center's Allen Building with the floor space of approximately 80 by 104 feet (24 by 31 meters) divided into five parts. Four parts were used for the presentations listed in table 1. The fifth was used as a reading area. Evaluation began only after the Energy Special was complete enough to open-a month and a half after con struction began. The first evaluation data were collected from an invited audience on June 28, 3 days ahead of the public opening. Evaluation data were collected until the exhibition closed on September 1, 1973. In all, nine analyses were made. Six were evaluations: evaluation by a panel of outsiders, volunteered comments, observed audience attention, time-lapse photography, visitor voting at individual presentations, and following sample visitors. The other three examined hours of attendance, visitor characteristics, and interest in possible themes for future summer specials. During the summer, six outsiders were invited to visit the Energy Special and then to be interviewed concerning what they observed. None of the six was a specialist in interpretation, and none was associated with the Pacific Science Center. However, all were professional people with some experience or personal interest in interpreting scientific topics to the public.
