Book Description
Excerpt from The Satapatha-Brahmana, Vol. 1: According to the Text of the Madhyandina School; Books I and II The translator of the Satapatha-brahmana can be under no illusion as to the reception his production is likely to meet with at the hand of the general reader. In the whole range of literature few works are probably less calculated to excite the interest of any outside the very limited number of specialists, than the ancient theological writings of the Hindus, known by the name of Brahmanas. For wearisome prolixity of exposition, characterised by dog matic assertion and a imsy symbolism rather than by serious reasoning, these works are perhaps not equalled anywhere; unless, indeed, it be by the speculative vapour ings of the Gnostics, than which, in the opinion of the learned translators of Irenaeus, 'nothing more absurd has probably ever been imagined by rational beings If I have, never theless, undertaken, at the request of the Editor of the present Series, what would seem to be a rather thankless task, the reason will be readily understood by those who have taken even the most cursory view of the history of the Hindu mind and institutions. Book Description
Andrew Lang, a Scottish anthropologist and folklorist, wrote the landmark work "Myth, Ritual, and Religion," Volume 1. This work contributes significantly to anthropology and religious studies. In this volume, Lang investigates the interdependence of myth, ritual, and theology in a variety of cultures and communities. He delves into myths and rituals from various civilizations, including ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, and indigenous cultures. Lang studies how myths and rituals can commonly play an important role in molding a society's religious beliefs and practices. He investigates the symbolic value of myths and rituals, emphasizing their role in understanding the mysteries of life, death, and the natural world. Lang's work is notable for its comparative technique, which connects nations in order to discover universal themes and patterns in myth and ritual. He contends that these traditions and ceremonies are not merely historical relics, but they continue to influence present religious’ practices and ideals. Some stories are brutal and weird, while others creep up on you and draw you in slowly. With an eye-catching new cover and professionally typeset copy, this edition of "Myth, Ritual, and Religion Vol. 1" is both current and intelligible.

Book Description
The Shatapatha Brahmana: Brahmana of One Hundred Paths is one of the prose texts describing the Vedic ritual, associated with the Shukla Yajurveda. Among the points of interest in the text are its mythological sections, including the myths of creation and the Deluge of Manu. The creation myth has several similarities to other creation myths, including the use of primordial water (similar to the Bible), the explanation of light and darkness, the separation of good and evil, and the explanation of time. The text describes in great detail the preparation of altars, ceremonial objects, ritual recitations, and the Soma libation, along with the symbolic attributes of every aspect of the rituals. The 14 books of the Madhyandina recension can be divided into two major parts. The first 9 books have close textual commentaries, often line by line, of the first 18 books of the corresponding samhita of the Yajurveda. The following 5 books cover supplementary and ritualistically newer material, besides including the celebrated Brhadaranyaka Upanishad as most of the 14th and last book.
