Excerpt from book: Tlvevpa, In the present day, a Spirit regarded as an Existence, that is, as, in itself, a Self Existent Being, and possessing Intelligence, Will, and the Power of Action, is, by nearly universal consent, asserted to be without a Body, or Immaterial; chiefly, I believe, because the few who maintain that a Spirit is Material, assert, that the Matter of a Spirit is the same, and subject to the same laws, as the Matter of which in this life Man has knowledge; but assertion will not, cannot, prove any position to be true; this, Revelation or Reason is alone capable of doing, and on each of these points There line is gone out into all the earth, and their words to the end of the World. We shall find by attentive consideration, that Man, that is, a Material Existence, is the only Species of Existence of which Man has knowledge, either by Revelation or Reason; and that all that he knows respecting Existences, shews, thatthere is not an Existence, which does not harmonise with the particulars forming the Species of Existence of which it has pleased Almighty God to make Man. Such being the case, I shall proceed to trace out what is known respecting Man as an Existence, and at the same time endeavour to shew, that all that is known respecting other Existences, gives no reason to suppose, that they do not belong to the same Species of Existence as that to which Man belongs. Man, as an Existence, in his Human Form, is a compound of Body and Spirit, and there is no evidence that in this Form, his Spirit is an Existence without his Body, or his Body without his Spirit; the two united are required to make the single Existence called Man.
