Book Description
Excerpt from The Roman Father, a Tragedy: As It Is Acted at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane, by His Majesty's Servants I Think it necessary to acquaint the Public, that I should never have thought of writing a Play on the following Subject, if I had not first read the justly celebrated Horace of Mr. Corneille, and admired his Management of some Parts of the Story. They will find me tracing him very closely (with some few Alterations) in the latter End of the Third Act, and in the Beginning of the Fourth. In the other Acts I am hardly conscious to myself of having borrowed even a Thought from him, tho' I might have been proud to have translated whole Scenes, if my Plan and Characters would have, admitted of it. I must beg leave to add, that I was induced, for the Sake of the Action, to put several Speeches at the latter End of the Play into the Mouth of Publius, which more properly belong to the Father. The Reader will accordingly find them restored here to their first Situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
