The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spirituality and the health of college students. Undergraduate students enrolled in Personal Health and Wellness classes at The University of Tennessee were selected to participate in the study. Two-hundred twenty-one students were administered two instruments: The College Student Appraisal of Risks Survey (The CARS) and the Spirituality Scale (SS). The CARS instrument was used to obtain descriptive statistics and specific health risk factors relating to the health of college students. The SS instrument was used to obtain the student's self-reported level of spirituality. Based upon a thorough literature review, there has been limited research into the relationship of the health of college students and their level of spirituality. This study does two things. First, it reports the development of a valid and reliable instrument to measure spirituality. Secondly, this study investigates the relationship between the self-reported level of spirituality and the health status of college students. The significance of the study is that this research is an important step toward understanding the role that spirituality plays in the various dimensions of health in young adults.

The influence of religion and spirituality on factors relating to an individual's health behaviors has emerged as an area of interest for researchers, in recent years. Religiosity (formal and informal religious practice, both public and private) and spirituality (individual's relationship to something sacred; meaning and values of one's purpose) are regarded as having extensive influence on an individual's cognitions, emotions and behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between religion, spirituality, and social support in relation to physical activity and intakes of dietary fat among a sample of college students (n = 914) from a large, public university in the southeastern United States. Data of interest were collected via a classroom-based assessment battery and analyzed. Most relationships between religiosity, spirituality, physical activity and dietary fat intake were not statistically significant. Intakes of dietary fat were found to be higher in students that reported greater levels of behavioral and functional religiosity. Greater levels of reported social support were found to be significantly related to higher levels of both moderate and vigorous physical activity. The magnitude of the relationships between the variables did not appear to be affected after controlling for demographics and social support. Overall, a few significant relationships were identified between religiosity, spirituality, physical activity and dietary fat intake, suggesting that the influence and function of religiosity and spirituality on the development and maintenance of health behaviors among college students may be small. This research has several implications for researchers and other college health professionals, with an interest in promoting chronic disease prevention through physical activity and dietary behaviors. This research provides a better understanding of the religious and spiritual landscape, as well as, the physical activity behaviors and intakes of dietary fat of college students. Thus, this examination of religiosity, spirituality, physical activity, and dietary fat intake among college students should be of interest to researchers of chronic disease prevention and to entities fostering programs to support these health-promoting behaviors.

Empirical findings supporting the connection between religion and spirituality and health have been consistently found in the literature, whereas the factors explaining this relationship have lacked clarity. The present study sought to explore this relationship and establish health behavior, mental health, and social support as mediating factors to the proposed association between religious commitment and physical health. Physical health was measured by a number of indicators: body mass index, self-reported medical conditions, prescription drug use, over-the-counter medication usage, and problem use of drugs and alcohol. A sample of 150 college students from a university in Central Virginia participated in this study. The initial hypothesis was that there would be a positive correlation between religious commitment and each potential mediator: health behavior, mental health, and social support. The second hypothesis proposed that religious commitment and physical health would be correlated. The third hypothesis posits that health behavior; mental health; and social support would be correlated with physical health; thereby, establishing them as mediators. The results of this study confirmed that health behavior was related to religious commitment; however, the remaining two proposed mediators were not found to have significant relationships with religious commitment. While health behavior was correlated to religious commitment, physical health was not found to be significantly related to religious commitment. These findings did not satisfy the conditions deemed for mediation; therefore, it was unable to prove that health behavior, mental health, and social support mediate the relationship between religion/spirituality and health, as hypothesized. Further implications of these findings are discussed.
