Research indicates that college choice is a complex process with various factors influencing a student's decision to enroll (Hossler & Gallagher, 1987; Jackson, 1982; Kallio, 1995; Leslie and Brinkman, 1987; Litten, 1982; Montgomery & Powell, 2006; Pock & Love, 2001; Stolzenbergs, 1994). This report discusses enrollment planning by colleges and universities as it concerns the understanding of why students choose to attend one particular college over another. First, the past responses of colleges to enrollment-threatening changes are presented. Next, an explanation is given of why knowledge of student college choice behavior is important for enrollment planning, student marketing, and recruitment. The most crucial choice a high school graduate makes is whether to attend college or to go to work. Here is the most sophisticated study of the complexities behind that decision. Based on a unique data set of nearly 23,000 seniors from more than 1,300 high schools who were tracked over several years, the book treats the following questions in detail: Who goes to college? Does low family income prevent some young people from enrolling, or does scholarship aid offset financial need? How important are scholastic aptitude scores, high school class rank, race, and socioeconomic background in determining college applications and admissions? Do test scores predict success in higher education? Using the data from the National Longitudinal Study of the Class of 1972, the authors present a set of interrelated analyses of student and institutional behavior, each focused on a particular aspect of the process of choosing and being chosen by a college. Among their interesting findings: most high school graduates would be admitted to some four-year college of average quality, were they to apply; applicants do not necessarily prefer the highest-quality school; high school class rank and SAT scores are equally important in college admissions; federal scholarship aid has had only a small effect on enrollments at four-year colleges but a much stronger effect on attendance at two-year colleges; the attention paid to SAT scores in admissions is commensurate with the power of the scores in predicting persistence to a degree. This clearly written book is an important source of information on a perpetually interesting topic.

The purpose of this study was to explore student participation in an on-campus, pre-enrollment activity in relation to perceptions of fit and subsequent patterns of college choice. It was determined that person-environment fit, based largely on perceptions of the physical environment, played a role in the college choice processes of this population. Participants in the pre-enrollment activity were better able to estimate their sense of fit with the institution prior to matriculation. Two models were developed including a revision and expansion to Hossler & Gallagher's (1987) model of college choice and an Estimation of Student Fit model, based on Greenough's (2004a) College Student Fit model. These models provided a lens for understanding each stage of the college choice and transition process and suggested implications for practice by enrollment managers and avenues for future research on student recruitment, college choice, and student retention.

A recurring issue among community colleges is the perceived high rate of attrition of their students. Summers (2000) conducted a study at a Midwest comprehensive community college to examine the relationship between student enrollment behaviors and various outcomes. He found that students who persisted enrolled earlier than those who did not. He also found that for each additional course dropped the likelihood of enrolling the following spring decreased by 50%. Based in part on this study some community colleges have begun to limit full matriculation after a given date at the beginning of the fall semester allowing late-start students to enroll part-time in "late-start" classes. The purpose of this study is the replicate Summer's findings using a similar cohort but at a different community college and then to apply the same techniques, if possible, to "late start" classes. Phase One of this study had similar findings to that reported by Summer. However, significant problems were encountered when similar techniques were applied to "late-start" classes. A brief review of relevant literature is included along with recommendations for further research. (Contains 14 tables.).
