Data is limited on the associated factors that most influence the ability to engage in Intuitive Eating. Intuitive Eating is an approach that teaches one how to create a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body.The research design is a non-experimental, cross sectional and correlational survey study. College students were recruited from Northern Illinois University to participate in a web-based survey study. Mean age was 24 years old. The mean BMI was 25kg/m(2) +/- 6.135 SD. 75% respondents were females from Northern Illinois University. The average Intuitive Eating score for college students was 77.85 +/- 77.85 SD. In sequential order of hypothesis, results indicated the following: Body Mass Index and Intuitive Eating indicated a weak negative linear association (-0.29, p=0.01). Dietary Intent Scale and Intuitive Eating has a negative linear association (-0.41, p=0.01). Past diagnosis of an eating disorder and Intuitive Eating has no correlation (-0.132, p=0.01). Eating and Appraisals Due to Stress were most associated with Intuitive Eating (0.775, p=0.05) Emotional eating and stress were the factors that most influenced the level of Intuitive Eating. The understanding of the most common risk factor for inhibition of Intuitive Eating in the college population was identified. This valid information can help to lead to the development of interventions that support for the development of healthy lifestyle habit.

Obesity is a national epidemic that contributes to preventable causes of death in the U.S. College students are particularly susceptible to overweight and obesity, and women are at increased risk of weight gain during the transition from high school. Dieting is a widespread practice among college women, but is ineffective and harmful in the long term. Intuitive eating offers a non-dieting alternative to weight management, teaching participants to eat only in response to hunger and satiety cues. Key components of intuitive eating include unconditional permission to eat, eating for physical rather than emotional reasons, reliance on hunger and satiety cues, and body-food choice congruence. It has been associated with improved physical and psychological health and has been studied in association with various dimensions of body image. Body Image Discrepancy (BID) represents whether a respondent believes her current body is larger or smaller than ideal. The association between BID and intuitive eating has not been studied. Given the prevalence of overweight and obesity in U.S. women and the role BID and intuitive eating might play in weight management, it is important to understand their relationship. The current study examined the relationship between BID and intuitive eating, controlling for BMI as a potential confounder. Analyses also examined the relationship between BID and each independent intuitive eating component. In addition, exploratory analyses examined the relationship between healthy-ideal discrepancy (HID), a different body image dimension, and intuitive eating. A sample of 44 SDSU freshmen completed baseline measurements as part of the Be In Tune with your Eating intervention. Results indicated greater BID was negatively associated with intuitive eating. Participants who believed that their current bodies were larger than ideal were less likely to honor hunger and satiety cues than participants who expressed little or no BID. HID and intuitive eating were not associated. Thus, the difference between current and ideal sizes appears to be more influential than the difference between healthy and ideal sizes. Women with high BID are less likely to eat intuitively, and should be targeted in future weight management interventions in order to avoid the negative health outcomes associated with dieting.

Dietitians are expected to deliver sound and scientifically objective advice to the general public, yet their personal beliefs and behaviors could influence delivery of nutrition care. Increased understanding of the personal attitudes and behaviors of dietitians concerning eating behavior and body image could help improve dietetic practice. Traditional nutrition education emphasizes cognitive eating, i.e., monitoring energy intake and comparing macronutrient intakes to the current acceptable ranges. Intuitive eating, however, promotes the release of cognitive eating in favor of greater attention to physiologic cues, or "body wisdom". We hypothesized that nutrition students in a traditional curriculum would report eating less intuitively than non-nutrition majors. We surveyed 258 female undergraduate students (96 nutrition majors and 162 non-majors) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Using Mann-Whitney U tests, we assessed the differences between nutrition majors and non-majors in terms of: intuitive eating, as measured by the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2); body mass index (BMI, kg/m2); magnitude of body dissatisfaction (actual weight - ideal weight); and dieting behavior. We also used non-parametric Spearman's rho correlations and Chi-squared statistics to examine relationships between variables. A two-way between-groups analysis of variance was used to calculate statistical differences in intuitive eating scores between diet behavior and major. Contrary to our working hypothesis, we found that IES-2 scores were significantly higher in majors versus non-majors (p= 0.01) and significantly lower (pnormalor underweight BMI. hese observations provide novel information indicating that nutrition undergraduate students, who have the intention of becoming registered dietitians, report that they eat more intuitively and have a lower degree of body dissatisfaction than do undergraduate students not majoring in nutrition. Additional research is needed to address issues related to body dissatisfaction and body weight.
