Many scholars have noted that police culture places a high value on masculine gender ideals. These gender ideals can conceivably create conflict wihin individuals whose gender identities may not match the ideals of police culture. It is reasonable to speculate that this gender role conflict (GRC) might influence job satisfaction. To explore the interaction between GRC and job satisfaction among police officers, two instruments (GRCS-1 for men and GRCS-F for women, and Level of Job Satisfaction Survey) were administered to 150 male and 50 female police officers to determine the relationship between GRC and job satisfaction. T-tests and regression analysis were used to explore (a) biological sex differences in GRC and job satisfaction, (b) GRC and job satisfaction independently and as a function of gender, and (c) demographic mediators between GRC and job satisfaction. The results indicated that male police officers reported a significantly higher level of GRC than female police officers on the subscale of restrictive affectionate behavior between members of the same sex. Conversely, female police officers reported higher levels of conflict between work/leisure and family relations than did male police officers. Male police officers reported a higher willingness to change departments if they would be able to retain their seniority than did female police officers. On the other hand, female police officers reported a higher willingness to leave police work if given another offer than did male officers. Male police officers reported a positive relationship between the predictor of success, power and competition and all outcomes concerning job satisfaction. A relationship between the predictor of work/leisure and family relations and outcomes concerning job satisfaction was found in male and female police officers. None of the reported demographic variables acted as mediators for GRC and job satisfaction for male or female police officers. The findings from this study suggest that there are complex relationships between biological sex and GRC, biological sex and job satisfaction and the intersection of GRC, job satisfaction, and policing. Implications for theory and counseling practice are discussed.

" Burnout, although not a diagnosable disorder in the DSM-5, has quickly become one of the most discussed topics in health and well-being research of the 21st century. Burnout is the consequence of not successfully dealing with chronic stress from the work place (Kaschka, Korczak, & Broich, 2011). Burnout falls into categories of exhaustion, depersonalization or cynicism, and diminished personal accomplishment or professional efficacy (Schaufeli, Leiter Maslach, & Jackson, 1996). The majority of research that is currently available on burnout looks at effects of burnout on individuals in human service professions, (i.e. teachers, social workers, nurses, and doctors). However, there is a rather significant gap in current research regarding burnout among law enforcement officers, specifically women within law enforcement. The primary aim of this study was to gather updated research looking at whether burnout affects women working in law enforcement differently than male officers and minimize the gap in current literature available. By gathering updated data, this researcher found that there does not appear to be significant differences between female police officers and male officers regarding burnout from non-operational police stressors (i.e., administrative and organizational). However, more than 71% of female officers, and 80% of male officers, met criteria for moderate to high levels of burnout. This research found that there was a statistically significant correlation between a measure of professional quality of life and burnout. Additionally, there was a statistically significant difference in the number of years on the police force, with females having served fewer years compared to males. Implications of this research include assessing whether different stressors have a differential impact on women versus men in law enforcement and use of different coping strategies and resources used by officers in response to exposure to job stressors.
