Epidemiological studies have shown that substance abuse among African American women is occurring at an alarming rate that exceeds rates for White women. The heightened use of alcohol and drugs among African American women is a problem that resulted from their racial, historical, and structural position in American society. The literature reveals the primary factors contributing to psychological distress and causing these women to turn to drugs as a way of escape are (a) childhood trauma and life stresses, (b) discrimination and racism, (c) victimization due to gender oppression, (d) economic and social marginality, and (e) powerlessness and alienation. The historically favored, traditional disease/medical model of substance abuse treatment has been marginally successful with African American women. This model fails to address issues of cultural differences and discounts their environmental influences. Studies have shown that drug treatment services fail to adequately address cultural, racial, and gender needs that are specific to African American women. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among alexithymia, attachment styles, and racial identity of African American in a residential substance abuse treatment facility. This study was based on a convenience sample of fifty-eight African American women in a metropolitan treatment center. Participants completed the following instruments: (a) demographic questionnaire, (b) Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), (c) Experiences in Close Relationships (ECR-R), and (d) Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI). The sample yielded three groups of alexithymic participants: (a) fifteen were low alexithymic, (b) seventeen were moderate alexithymic, and (c) twenty-six were high alexithymic. The highest mean scores were on the Private Regard subscale on the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity. The lowest mean scores were on the Attachment-related Anxiety and Attachment-related Avoidance subscales of the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Questionnaire. A Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to determine if there was statistical significance among alexithymia, attachment styles, and racial identity. MANOVA model assumptions were met. There was statistical significance on the Nationalist subscale and between the Assimilation and the Oppressed Minority subscales on the MIBI. It is important to note that the participants seemed to have made the same racial adjustments inside of the controlled environment as they had in society.

The absence of empirical evidence on the efficacy of substance abuse treatments among African Americans is a public health concern. The current study addresses this gap by examining the efficacy of Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) as compared to Counseling as Usual (CAU) for 194 African American adults seeking outpatient substance abuse treatment. MET was not more effective than CAU on drug use and retention outcomes overall. African Americans in MET reported using more drugs than those in CAU. However, other findings suggest that specific subgroups of African American substance users (i.e., alcohol users and females) might benefit from MET. Implications for future substance abuse treatment research with African Americans are provided.

Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Abstract: The primary purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between racial identity, resilience, coping, and college retention in a sample of 94 African American college students attending a predominantly White University. Based upon the current literature, a mediation model was proposed. Specifically, it was hypothesized that the relationship between resilience and college retention would be mediated by the internalization stage of racial identity (M1), problem-focused coping behaviors (M2), and emotion-focused coping behaviors (M3). Results revealed a positive relationship between college retention and the internalization stage of racial identity (B = 0.89, z = 2.82, p = .005), and a negative relationship between problem-focused coping and college retention (B = -.088, z = -2.24, p = .025). Bootstrapping analyses indicted no significant indirect effects for M1 (point estimate = -.0033, 95% BCA of -.0173 to .0058), M2 (point estimate = -.0055, 95% BCA of -.0203 to .0027), or M3 (point estimate = .0014, 95% BCA of -.0028 to .0168). Despite the absence of mediation, the findings of this study highlighted the complex nature of these constructs and the continued need for further exploration into their relationship.
