Book Description
Excerpt from The Registers of the Parish Church of Blacktoft, East Yorkshire, 1700-1812 IT is to be regretted that the Blacktoft Church Registers have been so ill-cared for that only those from the year 1700 remain in the Parish. There are probably many earlier Transcripts in the York Registry, one of which, for the year 16 39, is herein printed. The Parish was formerly a Chapelry attached to the Parish of Brantingham, and attended to at one period - as stated in Torre's mss. - by a Stipendiary Priest. It is evident the Vicars of Branting ham sometimes failed to procure a Curate, and perhaps in consequence the Parish Clerk became the Registrar, and made most of the entries in the Registers. These entries are generally badly written and badly spelt. The first book, 15 x 6 inches, consists of 30} leaves, for the most part loose, in a paper case. The second book, 13 x 7 inches, is bound in leather, and has parchment leaves. The third book, 145 x 12 inches, is bound in leather, has 17 leaves, and contains two Terriers, a list of Surplice fees, and an Abstract of Title Deeds.
