Book Description
Excerpt from The Rating of Land Values This essay is an attempt to reduce to order a collection of notes made at intervals during the past three or four years. It is published in the hope that it will be of interest to those who are endeavouring to find a practical solution of a very difficult problem. The especial thanks of the author are offered to Mr. E. J. Harper, the Statistical Officer of the London County Council, who has been good enough to read some of the proof sheets, and whose valuable criticism has led to the correction of many errors, and to a reconsideration of some portions of the work. It must not, however, be assumed that Mr. Harper shares the views expressed in this essay. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rating of Land Values: Notes Upon the Proposals to Levy Rates in Respect of Site Values Dear Lord Balfour, It has been suggested to me on several occasions that some notes upon the proposal to levy rates in respect of site values, which I made when I was Secretary to the Royal Commission on Local Taxation, would, if published, prove of some use to those who wish to study this subject. The lamented and untimely death of my friend and colleague, in the Secretaryship of that Commission, Theodore Llewelyn Davies, has prompted me to act on this suggestion, in order that the opportunity may be taken of associating his name with a subject to which he had devoted much time, and on which he was a recognised authority, Some weeks before his death he stated that in reviewing the work which he had undertaken during his career, none gave him greater satisfaction than his contributions to this question. By his advice these notes were added to in certain particulars, and he wrote Chapter VIII. himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Land Values in Chicago: The Relationship of the Growth of Chicago to the Rise in Its Land Values, 1830-1933 In the annals of the past, many whose names are unknown to me have furnished invaluable material. The real estate editors of the Chicago Tribune, who weekly wrote searching comments upon real estate transactions in the Sunday papers Since 1870, the editors of the Economist, the editors of the Real Estate and Building Journal have written many lines which reappear in these pages. Mr. Frank Chandler wrote much on early land-value history, and gave me access to his private files before his death. Mr. Everett Chamberlin, in his book, Chicago and Its Suburbs and Mr. Mark L. Putney, in his Land Values and Historical Notes of Chicago (1890, furnished great assistance. The work of Captain A. T. Andreas on the History of Chicago (1886) proved very useful. Book Description
Excerpt from The Law Relating to the Duties on Land Values and Mineral Rights and to the Valuation of the Same, Being of the Finance (1909-1910) Act, 1910: With the Incorporated Enactments Full Explanatory Notes and a Practical Introduction The chief definitions of value are contained in section 25. Although the standards of value now set up are based principally upon market value, and the standard of value for poor rate is based upon rental value, much may be gathered by a comparison with the law of rating; and much also may be gathered by a contrast with that law. I have ventured, therefore, in my notes to section 25, keeping in view that comparison and that contrast, to suggest principles for the application of the new standards to the various kinds of property which will now have to be valued. The procedure upon the forthcoming valuation, and the rights of Objection and appeal given to the subject, are fully dealt with in the notes; and here, again, use has been made of certain analogies with the rating practice.
