Book Description
Abstract: "The difficulty of developing reliable distributed software is an impediment to applying distributed computing technology in many settings. Experience with the ISIS system suggests that a structured approach based on virtually synchronous process groups yields systems that are substantially easier to develop, exploit sophisticated forms of cooperative computation, and achieve high reliability. This paper reviews six years of research on ISIS, describing the model, its implementation challenges, and the types of applications to which ISIS has been applied."

Book Description
This book summarizes the current knowledge on a cascade of gene regulation levels which operate in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells and which has until recently been poorly understood. While transcriptional control of eukaryotic genes has been extensively researched and the understanding of this process has reached very sophisticated levels, post- transcriptional control has received much less attention. As the contributions in this book demonstrate, not only is post-transcriptional control in eukaryotes better understood, it is now thought to be a major player in gene expression control in a number of key processes, i.e. control of cell proliferation, gametogenesis and early development or cellular homeostasis.

Book Description
DISC, the International Symposium on DIStributed Computing, is an annual forum for research presentations on all facets of distributed computing. This volume includes 23 contributed papers and an invited lecture, all presented at DISC ’99, held on September 27-29, 1999 in Bratislava, Slovak Republic. In addition to regular submissions, the call for papers for DISC ’99 also - licited Brief Announcements (BAs). We received 60 regular submissions and 15 brief announcement submissions. These were read and evaluated by the p- gramcommittee, with the additional help of external reviewerswhen needed. At the program committee meeting on June 10-11 at Dartmouth College, Hanover, USA, 23 regular submissions and 4 BAs were selected for presentation at DISC ’99. The extended abstracts of these 23 regular papers appear in this volume, while the four BAs appear as a special publication of Comenius Univ- sity, Bratislava– the hostof DISC ’99.It is expected that the regularpapers will be submitted later, in more polished form, to fully refereed scienti?c journals. Of the 23 regular papers selected for the conference, 12 quali?ed for the Best Student Paper award. The program committee awarded this honor to the paper entitled “Revisiting the Weakest Failure Detector for Uniform Reliable Broadcast” by Marcos Aguilera, Sam Toueg, and Borislav Deianov. Marcos and Borislav, who are both students, share this award.

Book Description
In distributed computing systems -- the software for networks -- a system may have a huge number of components resulting in a high level of complexity. That and issues such as fault-tolerance, security, system management, and exploitation of concurrency make the development of complex distributed systems a challenge.

Performance Engineering of Computer and Telecommunications Systems

Performance Engineering of Computer and Telecommunications Systems PDF Author: Madjid Merabti
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447110072
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
This book is the proceedings of the Workshop on the Performance Engineering of Computer and Telecommunications Systems. The workshop Was held at Liverpool John Moores University, England on the 5th and 6th September 1995. The workshop follows a series organised by the British Computer Society (BCS) Special Interest Group on Performance Engineering. The workshop addressed most techniques and experieI1ces in the Engineering of Computer and Telecommunications Systems that provide a guaranteed quality of service. Techniques such as measurements, simulation, and analytical models and their applications to ATM networks, Multimedia Systems, Distributed Systems, Access and Wide Area Networks were presented. In addition a number of papers dealt with advances in the development of analytical models, simulation architectures and the application of formal methods, stich as Process Algebra, to the specification and building of performance biased computer systems. The book is suitable for systems designers, engineers, researchers and postgraduate students interested in the design and implementation of Computer Systems, Networks and Telecommunications. Many people assisted in the arrangements and success of this workshop. I would like to thank them all and in particular the reviewers. I would also like to particularly thank our industrial sponsors GPT Public Networks Group, Liverpool and BICC Cables, Chester, England for their generous financial and material support.

Fundamentals of Distributed Object Systems

Fundamentals of Distributed Object Systems PDF Author: Zahir Tari
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0471464112
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 419

Book Description
Distributed Object Computing teaches readers the fundamentals of CORBA, the leading architecture for design of software used in parallel and distributed computing applications. Since CORBA is based on open standards, it is the only effective way to learn object-oriented programming for distributed systems. This language independent book allows material to be taught using Java, C++ or other Object Oriented Programming Languages.

Book Description
Euro-Parisaninternationalconferencededicatedtothepromotionandadvan- ment of all aspects of parallel computing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories of hardware, software, algorithms and applications for p- allel computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within which to promote the development of parallel computing both as an industrial te- nique and an academic discipline, extending the frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. This is particularly important at a time when parallel computing is undergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real industrial take-up. The main audience for and participants in Euro-Parareseenasresearchersinacademicdepartments,governmentlabora- ries and industrial organisations. Euro-Par’s objective is to become the primary choice of such professionals for the presentation of new results in their specic areas. Euro-Par is also interested in applications which demonstrate the e - tiveness of the main Euro-Par themes. There is now a permanent Web site for the series http://brahms. fmi. uni-passau. de/cl/europar where the history of the conference is described. Euro-Par is now sponsored by the Association of Computer Machinery and the International Federation of Information Processing. Euro-Par’99 The format of Euro-Par’99follows that of the past four conferences and consists of a number of topics eachindividually monitored by a committee of four. There were originally 23 topics for this year’s conference. The call for papers attracted 343 submissions of which 188 were accepted. Of the papers accepted, 4 were judged as distinguished, 111 as regular and 73 as short papers.
