A Theology of the Spirit in Doctrine and Demonstration

A Theology of the Spirit in Doctrine and Demonstration PDF Author: Teresa Chai
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498217648
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
This book is called a festschrift--meaning a book of essays written to honor those who have served the academic community well over a long period of time. Drs Wonsuk and Julie Ma, the honorees in this book, served as faculty members, Journal pioneers and editors and academic dean (Wonsuk) at the Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (www.apts.edu) for twenty-four years, 1983-2006. In 2006, Wonsuk accepted an invitation to become the Executive Director of the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in the United Kingdom and Julie accepted an invitation to become a research mentor at the same institution. The theme selected for this book: A Theology of the Spirit in Doctrine and Demonstration reflects the heart of the kind of people the Mas have been and continue to be in academics, practical ministry and, most importantly, in their personal lives. The list of scholars below, representing a broad array of nationalities and academic disciplines, have followed the same theme in contributing articles within areas of their particular interest and expertise: - Allan Anderson--Contextualization and Pentecostal-Charismatic Education in a Global Village - J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu--The Blessing of Abraham: Pentecostalism and Ecumenism in African Perspectives - R.G. dela Cruz--Peter, Women and the Spirit in the Bezan Test of Acts - Rose Engcoy--Historical Sketch of Wonsuk and Julie Ma - Harold D. Hunter--Pentecostal Reflections on Apostolicity - Dave Johnson--Baptism in the Holy Spirit vs Spirit Possession in the Lowland Philippines: Some Considerations for Discipleship - Veli-Matti Karkkainen--Theological Education in a Pluralistic Word: Theological Reflections - Kirsteen Kim--Mission in the Spirit: From Edinburgh to Canberra and Athens - Robert Menzies--Missional Spirituality: A Pentecostal Contribution to Spiritual Formation - Ekaputra Tupamahu--Pentecostal Feeling in Conversation with William James and Rudolf Otto: A Preliminary Exploration - Amos Yong--Pentecost and Virtual Spiritual Formation: Renewing Theological Education in Global Context

Recollections and Reconsiderations

Recollections and Reconsiderations PDF Author: Margaret R. Miles
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532640595
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 159

Book Description
Several years before his death, Augustine of Hippo reviewed his published works, commenting on his purpose in writing each, and correcting, from his present perspective, the mistakes he noticed. Inspired by Augustine's Retractationes, Miles's Recollections and Reconsiderations undertakes a similar project, a critical review of almost fifty years of her publications. Rereading and rethinking in chronological order effectively bonds life and thought into a corpus, a body of work with consistent values and interests. Such a review would be an illuminating project for any longtime scholar/student--both rewarding and humbling, an exercise in self-knowledge. Informed by a lifetime of studying Christian traditions, Miles concludes by describing both endemic problems with Christianity, and what she sees is its essence and beauty.

Singing and Suffering with the Servant

Singing and Suffering with the Servant PDF Author: David M. Stark
Publisher: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht
ISBN: 3647573469
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
The Old Testament is transformed from problem to ally when preachers attend to power at work in ancient and modern contexts by mirroring Second Isaiah's proclamation, listening to contemporary servant Israel, and learning from African American preaching in context of domination. This book analyses the impact of domination on Old Testament proclamation and thus leads to several unique contributions. Firstly, it reads Second Isaiah as a homiletic model for proclaiming older (pre-exilic) texts in response to exilic domination. Secondly, it treats the Old Testament as a rich resource for confronting racism and anti-Semitism though teaching and it introduces contemporary Christian-Jewish dialogue in Germany as a model for the Church. Lastly, it highlights preaching traditions within the African American Church as instructive for formulating an effective Old Testament preaching strategy.

A History of Prayer

A History of Prayer PDF Author: Roy Hammerling
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047424530
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 478

Book Description
“Prayer is real religion,” said Auguste Sabatier. If so, the academic study of prayer allows scholars to examine the very heart of religious practices, beliefs, and convictions. Since prayers exist in a wide variety of content, contexts, forms, and practices, a comprehensive approach to the study of prayer is required. Therefore, this volume includes scholars from a wide range of disciplines, in order to discover the breadth of “real religion” from the first to the fifteenth centuries. This volume especially focuses upon the history of Christianity and monasticism, where prayer was the school of hope, faith, and critical thought, awakening the faithful to every aspect of religious and daily life. Contributors are L. Edward Phillips, Karlfried Froehlich, Michael Joseph Brown, David W. Fagerberg, Columba Stewart, Benedicta Ward, Susan Boynton, Corey Barnes, Johannes Heil, Rik Van Nieuwenhove, Roger S. Wieck, Paul W. Robinson and Roy Hammerling.

The Social Gospel Today PDF Author: Christopher Hodge Evans

Pages : 238

Book Description
The contributors explore how the theological tradition of the Social Gospel, born within the social and cultural dislocations of late 19th-century America, relates to the dislocations of the current American scene. The contributors argue that America's only indigenous theological tradition remains powerfully relevant to mainline churches and to the scholars who work out of these institutions.

Trinity and History

Trinity and History PDF Author: Scott P. Rice
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532668120
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
How does God relate to the world? What difference does our understanding of God make for conceiving of God’s relation to us? Christian theology has seen a flourishing of activity in response to these questions under a common doctrinal theme: Trinity. That said, proposals for understanding how God relates to the world through the Trinity of God’s being—otherwise known as the relationship between the immanent and the economic Trinity—vary significantly. This book, reflecting on the work of four modern theologians—Dorner, Barth, Pannenberg, and Jenson—offers a set of constructive proposals on key issues relating to the God-world relation, including a way to understand divine immutability without denying God’s living history with others and a trinitarian notion of divine sovereignty that demonstrates how God transcends history from within the structures of time. At each step along the way the author conveys how Trinity opens up a richer, more expansive conception of God’s relation to us. This book shows how Trinity serves the practical work of theology as faith seeking understanding.
