This book is called a festschrift--meaning a book of essays written to honor those who have served the academic community well over a long period of time. Drs Wonsuk and Julie Ma, the honorees in this book, served as faculty members, Journal pioneers and editors and academic dean (Wonsuk) at the Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (www.apts.edu) for twenty-four years, 1983-2006. In 2006, Wonsuk accepted an invitation to become the Executive Director of the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in the United Kingdom and Julie accepted an invitation to become a research mentor at the same institution. The theme selected for this book: A Theology of the Spirit in Doctrine and Demonstration reflects the heart of the kind of people the Mas have been and continue to be in academics, practical ministry and, most importantly, in their personal lives. The Old Testament is transformed from problem to ally when preachers attend to power at work in ancient and modern contexts by mirroring Second Isaiah's proclamation, listening to contemporary servant Israel, and learning from African American preaching in context of domination. This book analyses the impact of domination on Old Testament proclamation and thus leads to several unique contributions. Firstly, it reads Second Isaiah as a homiletic model for proclaiming older (pre-exilic) texts in response to exilic domination. Secondly, it treats the Old Testament as a rich resource for confronting racism and anti-Semitism though teaching and it introduces contemporary Christian-Jewish dialogue in Germany as a model for the Church. Lastly, it highlights preaching traditions within the African American Church as instructive for formulating an effective Old Testament preaching strategy.

How does God relate to the world? What difference does our understanding of God make for conceiving of God’s relation to us? Christian theology has seen a flourishing of activity in response to these questions under a common doctrinal theme: Trinity. That said, proposals for understanding how God relates to the world through the Trinity of God’s being—otherwise known as the relationship between the immanent and the economic Trinity—vary significantly. This book, reflecting on the work of four modern theologians—Dorner, Barth, Pannenberg, and Jenson—offers a set of constructive proposals on key issues relating to the God-world relation, including a way to understand divine immutability without denying God’s living history with others and a trinitarian notion of divine sovereignty that demonstrates how God transcends history from within the structures of time. At each step along the way the author conveys how Trinity opens up a richer, more expansive conception of God’s relation to us. This book shows how Trinity serves the practical work of theology as faith seeking understanding.
