Book Description
Excerpt from Industrial Accident Prevention IN preparing the following material for publication, it has been the author's aim to make it an authoritative statement of accident prevention methods, proven by the road test of actual experience to be effective and practical. With this end in view photographs have been chosen for illustrations in preference to drawings or sketches, since a photograph which shows a device in actual use carries much more conviction than a drawing of the device, which may exist only on paper. The broad lines of protection common to all industries are now well defined. Among these might be mentioned Building Construction and Arrangement, Power Transmission and Control, and the Safeguarding of Shop and general Mechanical and Electrical Equipment. The special hazards peculiar to certain industries have also been determined in some cases, although there are still various branches of manufacture where little safety work has been done, and in which new and interesting developments may be expected during the next few years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Prevention of Industrial Accidents The prevention of accidents absolutely is of course impossible. But much more can be done to prevent accidents than at first sight appears. Statistics regarding the causes of industrial accidents in the United States have not been collected except in fragmentary form. It is but lately in fact that much interest has been taken in the matter. This is perhaps not surprising as it is not long since the responsibility of the employer for the safety Of his employees was brought home to him. Employers' Liability insurance to meet this increased responsibility is comparatively new in this country, having been first transacted in 1886, and only within the last few years having reached its present high development. Book Description
Excerpt from Safeguards: For the Prevention of Industrial Accidents In connection with the illustrations of safety devices we desire to say that we do not wish to appear as advertising any particular device. There are a great many devices which are just as practical as those we describe or illustrate, but of course it is impossible for us to include them all in this book. In the preparation of this book we have derived information and assistance from many sources. We should like to make acknowledgment of each instance in this place, but that will be recognized as impracticable. In a general way, however, we can and do thank the manufacturers of safe guarded machines and safety devices who have furnished us with pictures and descriptions, and the factory owners who have aided us in obtaining photographs of machinery and conditions in their plants. We also make acknowledgment of our indebtedness for many valuable suggestions to text-books dealing with. Industrial conditions, to trade papers and other periodical publications, to national and state publications concerning industrial dangers and safeguards, and to our corps of liability inspectors. ISBN: 9781331919216
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 506
Book Description
Excerpt from Safety: Methods for Preventing Occupational and Other Accidents and Disease The author has illustrated the underlying principles of the world movement for safety and industrial hygiene by means of typical examples, Showing the methods through which simple and practical safeguards are being applied to further these ends. This application has resulted in lowered costs and increased production, with cumulative tendency toward greater knowledge, caution, and self-control on the part of the workers. While the subject of accident prevention and shop hygiene has been treated in a broad way, the treatment has necessarily been limited to include only those features common to the generality. Liability and Compensation Insurance
Author: Ralph H. Blanchard
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331262879
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 410
Book Description
Excerpt from Liability and Compensation Insurance: Industrial Accidents and Their Prevention, Employers' Liability, Workmen's Compensation, Insurance of Employers' Liability and Workmen's Compensation The inadequacy of the employers' liability principle gave rise to a demand for more liberal legislation and the period beginning with 1911 has been marked by the enactment of workmen's compensation laws granting benefits to workmen for practically all injuries occurring during working hours. Such laws are now in force in thirty-two states and two territories, and an act was passed in 1916 covering all civil employees in the service of the Federal Government. These developments have broadened and intensified the need for insurance to relieve employers of the uncertain and heavy burden of payments to employees and to secure workmen in their rights to receive compensation. To furnish insurance commensurate with these needs both private and governmental agencies have been created and extended. Workmen's compensation and its insurance involve numberless intricate problems, legislative, administrative, and technical. The revolutionary nature of the principle and its rapid adoption have made it difficult to arrive at adequate solutions. Much remains to be done, but the accomplishments of legislators, public and private officials, and insurance scientists have been remarkable, and what might have been a growth of many years has been compressed into six. The work of these six years has been fundamental, precedent has not been allowed to rule, and the future will probably see the development of present principles rather than the discovery of new ones. Work-Accidents and the Law (Classic Reprint)
Author: Crystal Eastman
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331212430
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 454
Book Description
Excerpt from Work-Accidents and the Law The Slavs from Austro-Hungary, the Latins from the Mediterranean provinces, the Germans or the British-born, who come to Pittsburgh to do the heavy work of manufacture (and for Pittsburgh read the United States), come from a region of law and order to a region of law-made anarchy so far as the hazards of industry are concerned. For there is scarcely a country of modern Europe but has brought its statutes abreast of industrial progress and wrought out for itself, as we have not, some sensible adjustment between civil rights, human needs, and the ceaseless operations in which groups of men and powerful appliances are joined in producing what the world wants. Laggard as the American states have thus been in what Mr. William Hard has called the "law of the killed and injured," it is ours to profit by the experience of the countries which have from five to fifteen years' headway in this field. An American system should, none the less, be grounded firmly in American conditions. Toward the understanding of these conditions, of the common causes of accidents, and their consequences in the actual household experience of working people, this book is contributed. Miss Eastman presents the findings of the first systematic investigation of all cases occurring during a representative period in a representative American district. No such body of facts has hitherto been available, and the investigation could scarcely have been better timed in relation to constructive efforts towards the establishment of industrial justice. The field work was carried on during 1907-08 as part of the Pittsburgh Survey and the results were published in brief in "Charities and the Commons" in March, 1909. During the past year state commissions have been appointed in Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York for the purpose of recommending legislation on this subject.
