The Poet Gallery was a name that popped up in my mind when it came to my writings, because then you will find something for every occasion to touch someone's heart. I hope everyone who reads this book finds something for them to soothe, comfort, and even make them smile, laugh, and enjoy. All my writing was done under the name of Betty Jean Green. Fieldglass

Fieldglass PDF Author: Catherine Pond
Publisher: SIU Press
ISBN: 0809338157
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
Sexual identity, female friendship, and queer experiences of love Fraught with obsession, addiction, and unrequited love, Catherine Pond’s Fieldglass immerses us in the speaker’s transition from childhood to adulthood. A queer coming-of-age, this collection is a candid exploration of sexual identity, family dynamics, and friendships that elude easy categorization, offering insight on the ambiguous nature of identity. Saturated by her surroundings and permeated by the emotional lives of those close to her, the speaker struggles with feelings of displacement, trauma, and separateness. She is perpetually in transit, with long drives, flights, and train rides—moving most often between the city and the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. As the collection unfolds, the speaker journeys toward adulthood, risking intimacy and attempting to undo her embedded impulses toward silence and absorption. Reflective, graceful, and understated, Pond’s images accumulate power through restraint and suggestion. Deeply personal and intense, searching and yearning, associative and lyric, Fieldglass is a confessional about growing up, loving hard, and letting go.

"Harlem Gallery", and Other Poems of Melvin B. Tolson

Author: Melvin Beaunorus Tolson
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
ISBN: 9780813918655
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 473

Book Description
The poet Melvin B. Tolson (1898-1966) was once recognized as one of black America's most important modernist voices. Playful, fluent, and intellectually sophisticated, his poems stirred up significant praise, and some lively criticism, during his lifetime but have been out of print for decades and essentially left out of the literary canon. With the publication of this first complete collection of his work, Tolson can finally be given his proper place in American poetry. This volume brings together Tolson's three books of poetry--Rendezvous with America (1944), Libretto for the Republic of Liberia (1953) and Harlem Gallery (1965)--as well as fugitive poems after 1944. His work has at times been controversial because of his historical, intellectual subject matter, and his commitment to the priorities of art rather than the imperatives of politics. However a fresh reading of his challenging masterpiece, Harlem Gallery, a poem in 24 cantos, reveals an urgent meditation on the plight of the black artist in a white society and a concern with social justice that locates Tolson in the mainstream of African American writing. Such powerful themes, as well as his range of tone and mesmerizing imagery, have won Tolson a growing number of enthusiastic admirers, who place him alongside such legendary black poets as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Robert Hayden. While his peers Hughes and Countee Cullen were part of the Harlem Renaissance, Melvin B. Tolson was not identified with any particular movement, and his legacy in American literature has been elusive. This book, enhanced by a moving introduction by Rita Dove and useful notes by editor Raymond Nelson, provides the text for a renewed appreciation of one of the great talents in AfricanAmerican poetry.

Reflections

Reflections PDF Author: Elisavietta Ritchie
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780997262919
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
PREFACE This will be the third collection of Elisavietta Ritchie's work we have been privileged to publish, and what a remarkable collection it is. Rich imagination and a talent for metaphor are the hallmarks of her work. Here we see a poet writing at the top of her game, and game is the precise word for the often whimsical accounts she gives of the paintings she meditates on.One thinks of Keats' critical touchstone, the concept of negative capability he proposes, the sensitivity and imaginative power an artist has to intuit even the very center of cue ball, the ability of the individual to perceive, think, and operate outside the box. Poets often employ this symbiotic relationship with the visual arts, a literary device known as ekphrasis used to convey the deeper symbolism of the corporeal art form by means of a separate medium such as poetry. The poet contemplates a work of art and responds with a lifetime of experience and curiosity to imagine the world found in a given painting. Here are poems written in the voices of the artist, his wife (who might also be an artist), his mistress, his models, his viewers, his dog--One thinks of the recent popular film in which all the characters in the paintings found in a museum step out of their frames and celebrate their liberation once the museum doors have closed for the night. It seems a happy collaboration of poet and artist enhancing our understanding of a painting, as well as taking joy in the work from a verbal perspective. "How do I know what I think until I see what I say," I believe WH Auden once quipped.I think of a William Meredith poem from HAZARD THE PAINTER which tells the story of a 8-year-old Erica, a "factory of will," who when she returns from dancing class, "she dances!" Long may the dance continue for Lisa Ritchie and all her devoted followers who love how poetry can buoy the human spirit in the hands of such a fierce intelligence and curiosity. Richard Harteis
