Pages : 582

Book Description
Handbook of Mouse Mutations with Skin and Hair Abnormalities presents 48 mouse mutations that are all available to the biomedical community. Many of the mouse mutations with dermatological diseases are reviewed and illustrated in detail. This popular reference book gives you a single source to use when determining which mouse mutation will best serve your needs as a biomedical tool for sophisticated research projects. The book also includes an overview of domestic animal genodermatoses to provide alternatives to mouse models that do not exist or to complement those that do. A detailed section written by renowned experts compares the biology of human and mouse skin and skin diseases in the areas of development and the use of animal models, mammalian genetics, keratin biochemistry, epidermal and hair follicle cycles and kinetics, cytokines and growth factors, keratinocyte culture systems, cutaneous carcinogenesis, cutaneous immune system, and skin changes associated with mutations of the endocrine system.

Book Description
An updated and comprehensive reference to pathology in every organ system in genetically modified mice The newly revised and thoroughly updated Second Edition of Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice delivers a comprehensive resource for pathologists and biomedical scientists tasked with identifying and understanding pathologic changes in genetically modified mice. The book is organized by body system, includes descriptions and explanations of a wide range of findings, as well as hundreds of color photographs illustrating both common and rare lesions that may be found in genetically engineered and wild type mice. The book is written by experienced veterinary and medical pathologists working in veterinary medical colleges, medical colleges, and research institutes. Covering the latest discoveries in mouse pathology resulting from advancements in biotechnology research over the last 30 years, this singular and accessible resource is a must-read for veterinary and medical pathologists and researchers working with genetically engineered and other mice. Readers will also benefit from: A thorough introduction to mouse pathology and mouse genetic nomenclature, as well as databases useful for analysis of mutant mice An exploration of concepts related to validating animal models, including the Cinderella Effect Practical discussions of basic necropsy methods and grading lesions for computational analyses Concise diagnostic approaches to the respiratory tract, the oral cavity and GI tract, the cardiovascular system, the liver and pancreas, the skeletal system, and other tissues As a one-stop and up to date reference on mouse pathology, Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice is an essential book for veterinary and medical pathologists, as well as for scientists, researchers, and toxicologists whose work brings them into contact with genetically modified mice.

The House Mouse

The House Mouse PDF Author: Karl Theiler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642884180
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 183

Book Description
With the advent of transgenic technology, which allows the identification of specific gene activities in developing mammalian organisms, the house mouse has once again taken a very important place in experimental research as one of the genetically best understood mammals. More than ever, molecular biologists are in need of a detailed, standardized description of the anatomy of the developing mouse embryo. In this classic compendium, now brought up to date and corrected, the author presents each stage of mouse development in photographs and micrographs using hybrids of two inbred strains as a standard. Organ systems are systematically reconstructed from fertilization until after birth. Molecular biologists tracing the effects of genetic manipulations, as well as students and researchers of developmental biology, will appreciate the renewed availability of this standard reference work for its unparalleled accuracy, its attention to anatomical detail, and the extent of its documentation.

The Coat Colors of Mice

The Coat Colors of Mice PDF Author: W.K. Silvers
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461261643
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 397

Book Description
Many investigators seem to be fascinated by the coat colors of the mam mals with which they work. This seems to be the case particularly for those utilizing isogenic strains of mice, not only because such strains display wide ly different phenotypes, but because scientists, by definition, are an inquisi tive lot and it is sometimes difficult for the uninitiated to comprehend how such phenotypes are produced. This bewilderment becomes even more ap parent if the investigator happens to be involved in breeding studies and a number of attractively colored animals, quite different from the original stocks, appear. Thus I can recall numerous occasions when my colleagues, frequently working in areas completely unrelated to any aspect of genetics, have come to me with an attractively pigmented animal or, more likely, with a popUlation of segregating coat color types (usually because they have not tended their animals properly and have ended up with a cage full of F 2S displaying a number of different colors). How, they ask, do such colors come about? While in some cases it is easy to take chalk in hand and explain what has been going on (segregating) and why, in other cases it is virtually impossible. It is extremely difficult because while the interactions of many coat-color factors obey the simple laws of heredity and of predictable gene interactions, others do not.
