The Penobscot Expedition

The Penobscot Expedition PDF Author: George E. Buker
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1493083694
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
In 1779 the fledgling U.S. naval fleet suffered a catastrophic defeat against the British in the waters of the Penobscot Bay, losing forty ships in a battle that was expected to be a sure victory for the Americans. Commodore Dudley Saltonstall was blamed for the debacle and ultimately court-martialed for his ineptitude. In this groundbreaking book George E. Buker defends Saltonstall providing compelling evidence that he was not to blame for the loss and that in fact the court-martial was rigged against him. Buker’s conclusions foster a reassessment of Saltonstall’s naval strategies and shed new light on the political maneuvers of the time.

Frigates and Foremasts

Frigates and Foremasts PDF Author: Julian Gwyn
Publisher: UBC Press
ISBN: 0774840188
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 223

Book Description
The first comprehensive study of naval operations involving North American squadrons in Nova Scotia waters, Frigates and Foremasts offers a masterful analysis of the motives behind the deployment of Royal Navy vessels between 1745 and 1815, and the navy’s role on the Western Atlantic. Interweaving historical analysis with vivid descriptions of pivotal events from the first siege of Louisbourg in 1745 to the end of the wars with the United States and France in 1815, Julian Gwyn illuminates the complex story of competing interests among the Admiralty, Navy Board, sea officers, and government officials on both sides of the Atlantic. In a gripping narrative encompassing sea battles, impressments, and privateering, Gwyn brings to life key events and central figures. He examines the role of leadership and the lack of it, not only of seagoing heroes from Peter Warren to Philip Broke, but also of land-based officials, such as the various Halifax naval yard commissioners, whose important contributions are brought to light. Gwyn’s brilliant evocation of people and events, and the scholarship he brings to bear on the subject makes Frigates and Foremasts a uniquely authoritative history. Wonderfully readable, it will attract both the serious naval historian and the general reader interested in the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of naval history on North America's eastern seaboard.

The Reverend Jacob Bailey, Maine Loyalist

The Reverend Jacob Bailey, Maine Loyalist PDF Author: James S. Leamon
Publisher: Univ of Massachusetts Press
ISBN: 1558499423
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
The Reverend Jacob Bailey was a missionary Preacher in Pownal borough (now Dresden), Maine, who refused to renounce allegiance to King George III during the American War of Independence. Relying largely on Bailey's unpublished journals and voluminous correspondence, James S. Leamon shows how Bailey absorbed many of the intellectual currents of the Enlightenment but also the more traditional conviction that family, society, religion, and politics, like creation itself, should be orderly and hierarchal. Such beliefs led Bailey to oppose the Revolution as unnatural, immoral, and doomed to fail. Reverend Bailey's persistence in praying for the king and his refusal to publicize the Declaration or Independence from his pulpit aroused hostilities that drove him and his family lo the safety of Nova Scotia. During his time in exile, he wrote almost obsessively: poems, dramas, novels, histories. Though few were ever completed, and even fewer published, in one way or another most of lm writings depicted the trauma he underwent as a loyalist. Leamon's study of the Reverend Jacob Bailey depicts the complex nature and burdens of one person's loyalism while revealing much about eighteenth-century American life and culture. Book jacket.
