Key results obtained by the OSSE instrument during the first four years of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory mission are presented. OSSE has undertaken extended observations of the gamma ray emission from the galactic center region and found the positron annihilation radiation to be consistent with a two-component model: a spheroidal component located at the galactic center and a weaker galactic disk component. Simultaneous observations with the SIGMA imaging instrument have provided the first low-energy gamma ray spectrum of the diffuse continuum emission from the galactic center region. Results on galactic sources include the spectral observations of two new rotation-powered pulsars, PSR 1509-58 and Vela, the discovery of 110 keV cyclotron emission from the Be X-ray binary A0535+26, and the discovery that galactic black hole transients have two spectral classes: thermal and power-law. Extragalactic sources also have two spectral classes. Seyfert galaxies are typified by thermal spectral with exponential cutoffs from 50-300 keV, and blazars which exhibit power-law spectra that extend into the EGRET energy range. Blazar spectra also often have a spectral break in the MeV region.

Additioal gamma-ray and neutron detection capability is achieved above 10 MeV. Each detector has a CsI annular shield and a tungsten alloy collimator which define a 5 x 11 deg (FWHM) field-of-view. The detectors have independent, single-axis orientation systems which permit offset pointing to provide source-background subtraction. The sensitivity for line gamma rays the 0.05-10 MeV region will be .00002 - 00003 photons/cc-s for a .000001-second observation period. The several modes of data acquisition and the emphases for the eplanned observational program are discussed.

The Final Report on the Oriented Scintillating Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) is a reference document formatted in four parts to provide a concise summary of data covering the building and the testing of this Instrument. The main purpose of this document is to provide useful data for spacecraft integration activity. Most of the material is not original - it is pulled together from the more pertinent contents of the following categories: 1) description of OSSE, as specified, 2) construction data, and 3) test and measurements data, all drawn from design and test documentation. A fourth section, however, is drawn from original thinking on the subject of how OSSE might have been built and tested differently in order to achieve better results - the 'lessons learned section'. In this book are reported the main results presented at the "Fourth International Workshop on Data Analysis in Astronomy", held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, Erice, Sicily, Italy, on April 12-19, 1991. The Workshop was preceded by three workshops on the same subject held in Erice in 1984, 1986 and 1988. The frrst workshop (Erice 1984) was dominated by presentations of "Systems for Data Analysis"; the main systems proposed were MIDAS, AlPS, RIAIP, and SAIA. Methodologies and image analysis topics were also presented with the emphasis on cluster analysis, multivariate analysis, bootstrap methods, time analysis, periodicity, 2D photometry, spectrometry, and data compression. A general presentation on "Parallel Processing" was made which encompassed new architectures, data structures and languages. The second workshop (Erice 1986) reviewed the "Data Handling Systems" planned for large major satellites and ground experiments (VLA, HST, ROSAT, COMPASS-COMPTEL). Data analysis methods applied to physical interpretation were mainly considered (cluster photometry, astronomical optical data compression, cluster analysis for pulsar light curves, coded aperture imaging). New parallel and vectorial machines were presented (cellular machines, PAPIA-machine, MPP-machine, vector computers in astronomy). Contributions in the field of artificial intelligence and planned applications to astronomy were also considered (expert systems, artificial intelligence in computer vision).
