William I. Myers and the Modernization of American Agriculture
Author: Douglas Slaybaugh
Publisher: Purdue University Press
ISBN: 9781557532794
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
During the farm credit crisis brought on by the Great Depression, Myers served in Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal government, writing the legislation to consolidate federal farm credit programs. After a brief stint as deputy governor, he became governor of the Farm Credit Administration in 1933. Myers led the agency to two great successes: saving thousands of farms from bankruptcy and establishing a permanent, government-sponsored credit system for farmers comparable to what private banks provided industry. Myers returned to Cornell in 1938 and served for nearly fifteen years as dean of the College of Agriculture. Myers also served on the board of trustees of the Rockefeller Foundation, which was instituting agricultural research programs that would enable developing nations to become more productive, self-reliant, and anticommunist members of the global community.

Modernization of Agriculture in Developing Countries
Author: Isaac Arnon
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 664
Book Description
Until quite recently, agriculture in most developing countries of the Third World has been largely neglected by policy-makers, economists and planners, on the assumption that most resources should be devoted to industry. However, there is a growing realization that without progress in agriculture there will be economic stagnation, inadequate food production, and the vicious circle of poverty and low productivity will be perpetuated. The great hopes pinned on the 'Green Revolution' have only been partially realized, and any success is still confined to a fraction of the areas in need of development. Where the 'Green Revolution' has been successful, many problems have arisen in its wake - some being anticipated but others not - of which potentially the most explosive are the increasing gaps between various sectors in the rural population and between regions.
