This study is a qualitative, heuristic investigation of the mid-life mother's experience of her relationship with her adolescent daughter. the purpose was to identify and understand the essential themes and meanings inherent in the experience. An heuristic research design and methodology guided the processes of preparation to conduct the investigation, methods of data collection and methods of analysis and synthesis of the data. the inquiry involved five phases: autobiographical origins and self reflection pertinent to the mother-daughter relationship; a review of relevant literature; an elucidation of heuristic theory and methodology; analysis and synthesis of the data; and a summary of the investigation including implications and outcomes. the researcher interviewed herself as well as nine co-researchers. the co-researchers were volunteers, all of whom met the criteria--adult women between the ages of 40 and 55; mothers of adolescent daughters between 13 and 20. Individual depictions, portraits, and a composite depiction were developed from tape recorded interview data. Common themes were revealed: the mother's experience of intense pain and anguish; reliving and resolving the mother's own adolescence; and coping with challenges and trials of growing and changing toward mid-life self-fulfillment. the research data pointed to triggers in the mother-daughter relationship that awaken the mother's own adolescent issues and also inspire self-discovery and personal and professional growth. the mothers in this research investigation claimed responsibility for their own lives and moved toward self-fulfilling choices and activities.

[Abstract] This thesis explores the inner experiences of the relationship between mothers and their adolescent daughters. The specific research question is "WHAT IS THE MOTHER'S EXPERIENCE OF THE MOTHER/DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP DURING THE DAUGHTER'S ADOLESCENT YEARS?" I utilized the heuristic research model which consists of four basic states. Immersion, the first stage is characterized by an absorbtion in the question at hand. The second stage of Incubation allows understanding to grow within the researcher. Illumination is the third stage where one gains a complete picture of the experience. The final stage, Creative Synthesis allows for clarification, elaboration, and correction. My co-researchers were asked to describe their experience of their relationship with their adolescent daughters. As a coresearcher, I also contributed my own subjective thoughts and feelings to the study. Data collected via the methods of self-search, self-inquiry, and tape recorded, open-ended interviews. I examined the data thoroughly, explicating major themes which depict five commonalities in the shared experiences. In the presentation of the data are illustrations of these themes taken from the interviews in which responses varied in content, but the major themes emerged as similar thoughts and feelings. The data indicates that mothers viewed the mother/daughter relationship as complex, challenging, positive, rewarding, and often a struggle and included feelings of anger, guilt, competition, bodily reactions, and separation. Implications and applications of the research were discussed in light of enhancing interpersonal relationships, psychotherapeutic intervention, education and corrmuni ty based program suggestions, and further research in this area. The major focus of this thesis is to increase awareness of the nature and essence of the mother/daughter relationship during the daughter's adolescent years.

[Abstract] This study explores the question, "What is the mother's experience of her daughter's adolescence?" Since the question arose from my personal experience with the topic, I utilized the heuristic model to complete my research. I completed the six phases of heuristics, including initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication and creative synthesis. In the review of current literature, I located several studies on the mother-daughter relationship and the daughter's experience of adolescence; however, I found no identical studies on the mother's experience. I interviewed six mothers of adolescent daughters ages 13 to 18, utilizing an informal conversational interview style. These taped interviews, which averaged 90 minutes in length, were then transcribed and the data organized as required by the heuristic research model. Through my analysis, I identified six common themes among the co-researchers including: sense of loss, feeling of inadequacy, feeling conflicted, the daughter's attitude of entitlement, the mother's adolescent experience resurrected, and mutual growth. The findings of this study may be used by psychotherapists, parenting and family development educators, and as a resource for mothers whose daughters are experiencing, and approaching, adolescence.

[Abstract] The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the mother's experience of the mother daughter relationship during the daughter's adolescent years. A phenomenological method of research was employed. Fifteen participants, all women who had at least one female offspring between the ages of 13-18 with whom they resided, participated in guided interviews. An extensive review of the literature was conducted. This review demonstrated the value of phenomenological study. Phenomenological reduction was the method of data analysis. The structures illuminating the mother's experience of the mother daughter, relationship were arrived at through imaginative variation. In the process, textures, structures and meanings were differentiated. Central units of meaning were sought; the invariant constituents extracted. The uniqueness of each mother's experience was revealed through these procedures. Ultimately, a description of the essence of the mother's experience was obtained. Seven dominant themes were derived from the textural-structural descriptions: (1) The women in the study experienced the tensions between simultaneous yet polar feelings. (2) They view separation as necessary, yet it is experienced with ambivalence in spite of its developmental importance. (3) They become introspective and self critical, while also being responsible and impacted in terms of the relationship with the adolescent daughter. (4) The mother's perception of her relationship with her daughter influenced her relationship with her husband. (5) Women in the study reveal a sense of attunement to their daughter's world, one that is cognitive and intuitive. (6) They regard space as emotionally both constructive and essential to a positive separation. (7) They perceive time as limited and finite, resulting in feelings of urgency and affecting biological, sociological and qualitative dimensions of the relationship. Ultimately the study revealed the dominant polarity in terms of the significance of the relationship remaining grounded, while at the same time soaring in new directions. Implications were discussed relevant to utilization of the findings by parents and psychotherapists in understanding and coming to terms with issues that arise in the mother-daughter relationship during the adolescent years.
