God’s purpose in calling Abraham from his idolatrous kindred and bidding him dwell in the land of Canaan was to bring Heaven’s best gifts to all peoples. God told Abraham, “I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing.” Genesis 12:2. Abraham was called to a high honor—that of being the father of the people who for centuries were to be the protectors of the truth of God to the world and the progenitors of the promised Messiah. The Jews are that people. Men had almost

A New History of Redemption

A New History of Redemption PDF Author: Gerald R. McDermott
Publisher: Baker Books
ISBN: 1493444433
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 435

Book Description
Although Jesus's work of redemption is often viewed as a singular event, a careful examination of Scripture reveals that the Messiah began his redemptive work just after the fall and will continue it to the end of the world. In the spirit of Jonathan Edwards's History of the Work of Redemption, distinguished theologian Gerald McDermott traces the progress of redemption throughout the Bible and Church history. This book connects the dots surrounding Israel, redemption by the Jewish Messiah, secular and sacred history, the world religions, and Jewish-Christian worship through liturgy and sacraments. It shows how Jesus as Messiah was redeeming throughout Old Testament history, and it carries that story up through the last two millennia. McDermott contends that it is only through a historical examination of the Messiah's redemption amid the turmoil of the world and the worship of his people that one can best see God's beauty.

Hastening Redemption

Hastening Redemption PDF Author: Arie Morgenstern
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198041667
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
Accounts of the history of Zionism usually trace its origins to the late nineteenth century. In this groundbreaking book, Arie Morgenstern argues that its roots go back even further. Morgenstern argues compellingly that the Jewish community in Israel may be traced back to a large-scale wave of immigration during the first half of the nineteenth century. Inspired by an expectation for the coming of the Messiah in the year 1840, thousands of Jews from throughout the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, and Eastern Europe relocated to Jerusalem. Morgenstern describes the messianic awakening in all these lands but focuses primarily on the concept of redemption through messianic activism that prevailed among the disciples of Rabbi Elijah, the Ga'on of Vilna. These immigrants believed that the Messiah's arrival would bring about the redemption of the Jews, but also that, in order for this redemption to come about, they needed to prepare the way for the Messiah by fulfilling the commandment to dwell in the land of Israel. Morgenstern offers a dramatic account of their relocation, their efforts to renew rabbinic ordination, their reestablishment of the Ashkenazi community, and the building of Jerusalem. He also explores the crisis of faith that followed the Messiah's failure to appear as expected, and its effects on the community. Drawing on a wealth of previously untapped sources, Morgenstern sheds important new light on the history of messianic Judaism and on the ideological trends that preceded, and eventually gave birth to, modern political Zionism.

Redemption and Resistance

Redemption and Resistance PDF Author: Markus Bockmuehl
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567318761
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 410

Book Description
Redemption and Resistance brings together an eminent cast of contributors to provide a state-of-the-art discussion of Messianism as a topic of political and religious commitment and controversy. By surveying this motif over nearly a thousand years with the help of a focused historical and political searchlight, this volume is sure to break fresh ground. It will serve as an attractive contribution to the history of ancient Judaism and Christianity, of the complex and often problematic relationship between them, and of the conflicting loyalties their hopes for redemption created vis-à-vis a public order that was at first pagan and later Christian. Although each chapter is designed to stand on its own as an introduction to the topic at hand, the overall argument unfolds a coherent history. The first two parts, on pre-Christian Jewish and primitive Christian Messianism, set the stage by identifying two entities that in Part III are then addressed in the development of their explicit relationship in a Graeco-Roman world marked by violent persecution of Jewish and Christian hopes and loyalties. The story is then explored beyond the Constantinian turn and its abortive reversal under Julian, to the Christian Empire up to the rise of Islam.

The Judaism of Jesus

The Judaism of Jesus PDF Author: J. Christopher Garrison
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1490829741
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
We had hoped it was he [the Messiah] who would redeem Israel (Luke 24:21) In this book, you will learn that the religion Jesus founded was not Gentile or called Christianity. The name Christianity is not found in the New Testamenta work authored by Jews who followed Jesus; that the religion of Jesus was a form of Judaism that revolved around the Hebrew concept of Brit Hadashah, meaning New Covenant. This concept first appeared in the writings of Jeremiah, one of the great prophets of Judaism; that to achieve the full task Jews have expected of their Messiahof redeeming Israel and completing Gentile world salvationthere have been three separate stages in the work of Jesus the Messiah: (1) the Atonement & Resurrection stage; (2) the Gentile stage (represented by two thousand years of Gentile Christianity); and (3) the Jewish (or Jewish redemption) stage; that with regard to the Messiahs prophecy on Jerusalem and on the completion (or fulfillment) of his Gentile stagesee Luke 21:24: Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilledon June 7, 1967 (the day Jerusalem fell to Jews), the Messiahs prophecy was fulfilled. Hence, with June 7, 1967 formally marking the end of the Messiahs Gentile (or Christian) stage, the Messiahs final (or Jewish) stage has already begun; that with the times of the Gentiles (or Christianity) over, why Christians must adjust and reorient themselves to the new Jewish era and reality that is rising; many other topics of vital relevance to our present transitional erafrom Gentile-Christian to Jewish-centered timeswhere world history is quickly reaching a tumultuous climax...centered on the Jews, Jesus the Messiah and the Messiahs New Covenant Judaism as the winning side of end-time history.
