Book Description
The Mass Media and Village Life assesses the actual and potential contribution of mass communication media to the process of development in the Third World in general and India in particular. Despite the faith placed in the power of the mass media to promote desirable social change in the less developed countries, the impact of mass communication on development in India has been limited. The authors of this volume examine the reasons for this by studying the process of communication in Indian villages. Their conclusions are based on extensive anthropological studies of five villages in three Indian States which, taken together, provide a graphic account of Indian village life. These detailed case studies provide new insights into the role played by communication in the social processes that bear upon development. The study locates communication firmly within the socio-economic context of community life and offers both qualitative and quantitative data in support. The authors conclude that the influence of the media is filtered through structures of inequality that themselves pose a major obstacle to change. Further, that locally-based rather than centralised strategies for communication show the most promise of success.

Author: Colin Sparks
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 184920537X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 266
Book Description
Globalization, Development and the Mass Media gives a comprehensive and critical account of the theoretical changes in communication studies from the early theories of development communication through to the contemporary critiques of globalization. It examines two main currents of thought. Firstly, the ways in which the media can be used to effect change and development. It traces the evolution of thinking from attempts to spread ′modernity′ by way of using the media through to alternative perspectives based on encouraging participation in development communication. Secondly, the elaboration of the theory of media imperialism, the criticisms that it provoked and its replacement as the dominant theory of international communication by globalization.

The Transformation of the Media
Author: Nicholas Stevenson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317887301
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
The changing pattern of contemporary media is one of the most striking and important transformations of our age. This major new work seeks to understand the implications of a series of mediated processes in relation to public cultures and modern identities. In The Transformation of the Media the author leads the reader through a number of complex theoretical issues, connecting the nature of modern communication to the affects this has on our common moral and ethical lives. Most significantly, he argues that a number of perspectives as diverse as Marxism, post-modernism, liberalism, communitarianism and technological determinism can all be found wanting in this regard. The Transformation of the Media attempts to situate the media, and more theoretical concerns, within a broad sociological framework. The volume adds to our shared understanding of the media's relation to contemporary cultural transformations including globalisation, the development of informational capitalism, the changing nature of the public sphere and the impact of new social movements. More specifically, through a discussion of the 'new media order' and the Rwandan genocide a critical prism is held up to existing debates concerning the globalisation of the media. Key features: an extremely topical and accessible analysis of the media's implications for contemporary cultural transformations combines a theoretical and empirical approach presents complex theoretical ideas in an accessible way This book will be essential reading for students studying globalisation, the global media, new media technology, identity and cultural development in cultural studies, media studies, and sociology and politics courses.

Reaction to World News Events and the Influence of Mass Media in an Indian Village
Author: Thomas Poffenberger
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472902253
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 53
Book Description
Our major research interest in the village under study was originally in the area of socialization practices, social change and variables related to fertility behavior. We had not planned a study of the diffusion of news events and villagers’ reactions to them. However, the Indian Government was considering the use of media for a major mass communication program, to propagate the idea of having small families through the use of family planning methods, and we believed it would be of value to examine any data that might be helpful in getting at least some feeling about what villagers read in the papers and what they heard on the radio, as well as their understanding of the information and their attitudes toward it. We subsequently asked questions about the use of mass media. [1]

Sounding Out Heritage
Author: Lauren Meeker
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 0824838076
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Sounding Out Heritage explores the cultural politics that have shaped the recent history and practice of a unique style of folk song that originated in Bắc Ninh province, northern Vietnam. The book delves into the rich and complicated history of quan họ, showing the changes it has undergone over the last sixty years as it moved from village practice onto the professional stage. Interweaving an examination of folk music, cultural nationalism, and cultural heritage with an in-depth ethnographic account of the changing social practice of quan ho folk song, author Lauren Meeker presents a vivid and historically contextualized picture of the quan họ “soundscape.” Village practitioners, ordinary people who love to sing quan họ, must now negotiate increased attention from those outside the village and their own designation as “living treasures.” Professional singers, with their different performance styles and representational practices, have been incorporated into the quan họ soundscape in an effort to highlight and popularize the culture of Bắc Ninh province in the national context. With its focus on the politics of rescuing, preserving, and performing folk music, this book makes a timely contribution to studies of cultural politics by showing with considerable nuance how a tradition can become a self-conscious heritage and national icon. In 2009, Quan Họ Bắc Ninh Folk Songs was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Defining and reframing quan họ as cultural heritage has further complicated the relationship between village and professional quan họ and raises crucial issues about who has the authority to speak for quan họ in the international context. Sounding Out Heritage offers an in-depth account of the impact of cultural politics on the lives and practices of quan họ folk singers in Vietnam and shows compellingly how a tradition can mean many things to many people.

Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
The concept of nation building is a multi-dimensional process, addressing various components simultaneously. It takes into account the various historical and geographical perspectives of the country in question, noting the peculiarities and diversity of its cultural ethos, including its social, economic and political structures. This volume addresses these inter-linked aspects, and the innovative development of these structures and institutions. However, such changes and development must be directed to create a more culturally homogenous and productive society, so that basic human needs like food, shelter, healthcare and education are fulfilled at the optimum level. All-round development and growth for the nation can be achieved only with a robust economy and political stability. As such, the process of nation building and development is a multifaceted phenomenon. In the context of India, this process is associated with the central values embodied in the preamble of the country’s constitution, which advocates for the establishment of secular, socialist and democratic society based on well-defined fundamental rights.
