Book Description
Tommy Turner is an English teacher at football-crazed Midwestern University. Although he is uninvolved with the politics of the day, Tommy suddenly finds himself the center of a free-speech debate on campus. An editorial in a student magazine praises him for planning to read Bartolomeo Vanzetti's sentencing statement to his class as an example of eloquent composition, even in broken English composed by a non-professional. The school's conservative trustees, led by Ed Keller threaten to fire Tommy if he doesn't withdraw the reading from his lecture. The subject of free speech and Tommy's dilemma of conscience anchor the dramatic subplot's social significance. The lighter comic triangle plot concerns a return visit to attend the big football game by Joe Ferguson, a former football hero and onetime love interest of Turner's wife Ellen. Joe is recently divorced and he rekindles Ellen's romantic notions at the very moment when her marriage to Tommy is being tested by the events on campus.

Category : History
Languages : en

Book Description
After more than fifty years since the last publication, the cuneiform texts relating to the treatment of the loss of male sexual desire and vigor in Mesopotamia are collected in this volume. The aim of the book is to present Mesopotamian medical tradition regarding the so-called nīš libbi therapies. šà-zi-ga in Sumerian, nīš libbi in Akkadian, lit. "raising of the 'heart'", is the expression used to indicate a group of texts intended to recover the male sexual desire. This medical tradition is preserved from the Middle Babylonian period to the Achaemenid one. This broad range testifies to the importance of the transmission of this material throughout Mesopotamian history. The book provides the edition of this textual corpus and analyzes it in the light of new knowledge on ancient Near Eastern medicine. Moreover, this volume aims to show how theories and methodologies of Cultural Anthropology, Ethnopsychiatry and Gender Studies are useful for understanding the Mesopotamian medical system. This edition is an important tool for understanding Mesopotamian medical knowledge for Assyriologist, however since the texts have been translated and discussed using the anthropological and gender perspectives they are accessible also to scholars of other research fields, such as History of Medicine, Sexuality and Gender.

The Holy Spirit VS. Man's Animal Kingdom

The Holy Spirit VS. Man's Animal Kingdom PDF Author: Paul Cronin
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1662448740
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
In this book, I attempt to reconcile events in the Bible to factual science discoveries such as archaeological and DNA discoveries. I explain what I believe was Moses’s true motivation for marching the slaves into Canaan and his embedded messages in his writings. Applying this theory, I now believe and explain why creating a god and religion was man’s early way of governing and controlling people, placing priests as the gatekeepers to heaven and giving them power over the masses. I explain how I believe that Moses’s writings sowed the seeds of racism, tribalism, sexism, and homophobia. The ripple effects through time perpetuated by the priests and clerics have created a divided, dysfunctional, and unholy society in the USA and abroad. Materialism and greed are the gods of today. Our society is and has always been man’s animal kingdom that has murdered Jesus, disconnecting us with the Holy Spirit and derailing our spiritual evolution.

Year of the Pitcher

Year of the Pitcher PDF Author: Sridhar Pappu
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
ISBN: 1328768139
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
The story of the remarkable 1968 baseball season. “Seldom does an era, and do sports personalities, come alive so vividly, and so unforgettably.” —The Boston Globe In 1968, two remarkable pitchers would dominate the game as well as the broadsheets. One was black, the other white. Bob Gibson, together with the St. Louis Cardinals, embodied an entire generation’s hope for integration at a heated moment in American history. Denny McLain, his adversary, was a crass self-promoter who eschewed the team charter and his Detroit Tigers teammates to zip cross-country in his own plane. For one season, the nation watched as these two men and their teams swept their respective league championships to meet at the World Series. Gibson set a major league record that year with a 1.12 ERA. McLain won more than 30 games in 1968, a feat not achieved since 1934 and untouched since. Together, the two have come to stand as iconic symbols, giving the fans “The Year of the Pitcher” and changing the game. Evoking a nostalgic season and its incredible characters, this is the story of one of the great rivalries in sports and an indelible portrait of the national pastime during a turbulent year—and the two men who electrified fans from all walks of life. “Explores so much more than the battle between two pitchers and their teams . . . A fine history of a vital period in the history of not only baseball, but America.” —Kirkus Reviews “A compelling tale of all that America was in the turbulent year of 1968, told through a (mostly) baseball prism.” —New York Post
