The Pursuit of Technological Superiority and the Shrinking American Military

The Pursuit of Technological Superiority and the Shrinking American Military PDF Author: Daniel R. Lake
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349786810
Category : Political Science

Book Description
Why has the US military begun to suffer from overstretch in recent decades? Why is one of the largest militaries in the world, and the most expensive by far, periodically stressed by the operational demands placed upon it? This book argues that recent problems with overstretch are the result of a heavy reliance on technology to solve tactical and strategic problems. Over the last seven decades, the US armed services have consistently chosen to push the technological frontier out in an effort to first gain, and then maintain, qualitative superiority over potential foes. The high procurement and support costs associated with cutting-edge weapon systems has resulted in a military that is shrinking in both absolute size and in the relative share of combat forces. The culmination of this process is a US military that increasingly lacks the capacity needed to conduct operations without putting significant stress on its personnel and equipment. Lake argues that this pattern is a manifestation of an American cultural disposition favoring technology. He shows that this affinity for technology is present in the organizational cultures of all the armed services, though not to the same degree. By examining procurement programs for each armed service, this book reveals how attempts to develop and leverage superior technology has resulted in some notable program failures, high procurement costs for the latest generation of equipment with associated production cuts, and the high support requirements that are causing the relative share of combat forces to shrink. Lake’s analysis of recent initiatives by the armed services suggests that this pattern is likely to continue, with the US military remaining prone to overstretch whenever its operational tempo increases above the peacetime baseline.

Insect Sex Pheromones

Insect Sex Pheromones PDF Author: Martin Jacobson
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323152414
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 395

Book Description
Insect Sex Pheromones is a revised and expanded edition of the book ""Insect Sex Attractants"" and covers greater discoveries in the field of sex pheromones. It is discovered that many sex pheromones are sexually excitatory rather than attractive. This discovery prompted the substitution of the more accurate and encompassing term ""pheromones"" for the term ""attractants"" in the title of this edition. Composed of 13 chapters, this book has chapters that cover the occurrence in female and production in male of sex pheromones in various insect species. The insect orders considered include Acarina, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Homoptera, Diptera, Isoptera, Neuroptera, Siphonaptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Trichoptera, and Mecoptera. The following chapter discusses pheromones produced by one sex that lure to assemble for mating. This book goes on discussing the anatomy and physiology of scent glands of male and female insects; the attractant perception mechanism; and the behavioral and electrophysiological responses of insects to sex pheromones. Other chapters are devoted to the influence of several factors on the presence of chemical sex attraction or excitation in any insect. The concluding chapters deal with the collection, isolation, identification, synthesis, and analysis of sex pheromones. This book will greatly appeal to research and economic entomologists, insect physiologists, chemists, and ecologists.

The Encyclopedia of Old Fishing Lures

The Encyclopedia of Old Fishing Lures PDF Author: Robert A. Slade
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1466901713
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 453

Book Description
Robert A. Slade, after collecting old fishing tackle since 1958 and contributing articles on old fishing lures for a collector magazine for several years started researching and writing books in the 1990's. He published the HISTORY & COLLECTIBLE FISHING TACKLE OF WISCONSIN in 1999 which sold 4,500 copies. Bob realized that even though there have been many books published on the subject of old fishing lures that few books covered any detailed history on the old lure makers. His latest book writing project was nine years in the making and covers over 100 years of lure making history starting in 1875 and covers over 2,500 lures makers throughout all of North America. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF OLD FISHING LURES MADE IN NORTH AMERICA is the first publication with extensive history and patent information on old lure makers and the first to include extensive coverage on Canadian lure makers. The author traveled to 11 states and 3 Candian Providences visting collectors homes, newspaper archives, museums and other sources and has taken over 10,000 pictures in preparing the historical stories for these books. The set of books arranges for the individual and company lures makers to appear in alphabetical order. People purchasing these books can buy any one single book, a whole set, or even a book a month if they desire as the books will be printed and shipped on demand. Each book has over 400 pages of text, pictures and collector values with each book containing a table of contents and index as well as a master index for the complete set of books.
