Book Description
Excerpt from The London Medical Gazette, Vol. 6: Being a Weekly Journal of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences; April 3, 1830, to September 25, 1830 Sometimes the cancerous structure appears to us as a distinct and circumscribed tumor, the limits of which are well defined but in other instances portions of this cancerous structure extend from the original seat of dis ease into the neighbouring parts, forming a striking contrast in appearance with the adipose substance which separates it from the other textures. The absorbent glands of the axilla assume a similar appearance they seem to be converted into a texture very much like that of the original tumor. Book Description
Excerpt from The London Medical Gazette, Vol. 13: Being a Weekly Journal of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences; Vol. I for the Session 1833-34 This would seem to be a very common notion: but it is a very erroneous auda very damerons notion.. It should always be remembered that the science is quite dis. Tinct from the art of physic. A knowledge of the science prepares its possessor ia deed, but it does not qualify him for exer cising the art. Rules of practice may be dictated by the teacher, and committed to memory by the student; but in applying those rules, the most painful embarrass ment, the most pernicious blundering, may and will perpetually occur, unless a long apprenticeship has been served to the art itself. It is necessary that the prac titioner should begin with some acquired sagacity in the investigation of diseases, and with some acquired address in their management. These qualities neither books nor lectures are able to communi cate; yet without them the earlier years of our practice must be full of peril - as well to the lives of those who confide in our skill, as to our own reputation and peace of mind. Book Description
Excerpt from The London Medical Gazette, Vol. 20: Being a Weekly Journal of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences; (Vol II for the Session 1836-37) Except at the commencement, I am not an advocate for the use of emetics in fever. They fail in checking the disease, and they are apt to be followed by considerable debility of the stomach and general sys tem, - states which it would be better to avoid where the patient has to run through the course of a long and exhausting dis ease. If called to acase of fever in which you cannot give an emetic, there are two or three other remedial agents you may employ to moderate the feverish excite ment, and render the disease milder and more manageable during its progress. One of these is James's powder, with which you may combine blue pill or hydrargyrum cum creta, if necessary, giving two 0r three grains Of each every third or fourth hour, according to circum stances. Another remedy, which many are in the habit of using, particularly where the fever is accompanied with symp toms of inflammatory excitement, is a weak solution of tartar emetic. Two grains of tartar emetic may be dissolved in' a' pint of barley-water; and of this mixture a table-spoonful may be taken every second hour.' These are good and useful remedies in the first stage of fever they moderate the feverish excitement, act gently on the bowels, and produce more or less diaphoresis.
