William Blake, the Man
Aleta Dey
Author: Francis Marion Beynon
Publisher: Broadview Press
ISBN: 146040307X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
Francis Marion Beynon’s autobiographical novel Aleta Dey is increasingly recognised as a small classic of early twentieth-century fiction. Beynon was a journalist and feminist much involved in public affairs in early twentieth-century Manitoba. In 1917, aged 33, she was forced to leave her job as a result of her open pacifism, and she soon moved to New York where she dropped out of the public eye. Aleta Dey, first published in 1919, tells in plain and affecting prose the story of a girl growing up in Manitoba, becoming politically conscious, and falling in love with McNair, a man of much more conventional views. The First World War brings a crisis for them both after McNair enlists as a soldier. Though Beynon was a Canadian, her spare, emotionally open prose may have less in common with that of other Canadian writers of the time than it does with the style of contemporaneous western American women writers such as Willa Cather and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Like Cather’s My Antonia, Beynon’s Aleta Dey resonates with prairie simplicity, passion, and strength.

The Fine Art of Photography
Author: Paul L. Anderson
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330585504
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 371
Book Description
Excerpt from The Fine Art of Photography In "Pictorial Photography, Its Principles and Practice" the author endeavored to produce a textbook which should furnish technical information to those camera workers who desire to express artistic impulses, thus enabling them to choose the best medium for any particular purpose, and to become skilled in its use; but the aim of the present work is, on the other hand, to supplement the earlier book by pointing out the underlying principles of art insofar as they can be applied to photography, and to encourage the student of the subject to apply these principles in his own work. Necessarily this book must differ in a measure from the former one as regards plan, since technique, which is entirely scientific, can be a matter of rule, whereas an artistic impulse, being purely of the mind and dealing with intangible things, cannot be reduced to a formula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
