Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln, in Verse Today we all come to celebrate The birthday of Abraham Lincoln the Great, Our model - our hero the greatest of men, It helps us each day when we know What he's been. His home we all know was the poorest to find, Yet all through his life he was humble and kind, His mother his teacher, had taught him each day, To be upright and honest in work and in play. The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1

The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 PDF Author: Ida M. Tarbell

ISBN: 9781331282631

Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1: Drawn From Original Sources and Containing Many Speeches, Letters and Telegrams The work here offered the public was begun in 1894 at the suggestion of Mr. S. S. McClure and Mr. J. S. Phillips, editors of "McClure's Magazine." Their desire was to add to our knowledge of Abraham Lincoln by collecting and preserving the reminiscences of such of his contemporaries as were then living. In undertaking the work it was determined to spare neither labor nor money and in this determination Mr. McClure and his associates have never wavered. Without the sympathy, confidence, suggestion and criticism which they have given the work it would have been impossible. They established in their editorial rooms what might be called a Lincoln Bureau and from there an organized search was made for reminiscences, pictures and documents. To facilitate the work all persons possessing or knowing of Lincoln material were asked through the Magazine to communicate with the editor. The response was immediate and amazing. Hundreds of persons from all parts of the country replied. In every case the clews thus obtained were investigated and if the matter was found to be new and useful was secured. The author wrote thousands of letters and travelled thousands of miles in collecting the material which came to the editor simply as a result of this request in the magazine. The work thus became one in which the whole country co-operated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Out of the Heart of Kentucky

Out of the Heart of Kentucky PDF Author: Daniel Maurice Robins
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780243404919
Category : Poetry

Pages : 104

Book Description
Excerpt from Out of the Heart of Kentucky: A Rhymed Story of the Life of Abraham Lincoln The Great Ruler of the Universe places greatness at times in strange surroundings, but no one would ever have thought to look for it in the wilderness of the Heart of Kentucky nearly six score and eight years ago. If the sun broke through the clouds on the twelfth day of February 1809 it lighted and brightened a little log cabin on a meandering creek in Hardin County (now Larue), Kentucky in which Abraham Lincoln was ushered into this world. I doubt if the birth of anyone now living and born in the United States was attended with tragedy and sorrow greater than his. Poverty and obscurity were his companions in the long struggle upward to fame. Out of the valley of oblivion he rose, however, like a great majestic mountain, tipped with white, to the achievement of human success and service to his fellow men. Only once in five hundred years does his kind pass along the highroad of history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Memories of President Lincoln

Memories of President Lincoln PDF Author: Walt Whitman
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780266479376
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
Excerpt from Memories of President Lincoln: And Other Lyrics of the War Whitman did not subject Lincoln to the lit crary but to the human motive. Lincoln does not become a literary figure by his touch. Does not become a man in a book. After Whitman is done with him Lincoln still remains Lincoln. No way reduced. No way aggrandized. Only better understood. His background does not become a book. His background remains what it was. Remains life. Generic life. As life is where life finds life at the root. I may let Whitman put in'a word for himself. Whitman said to me of Lincoln. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
