Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 1 of 2 Around every great man many legends arise, and biographers, annotators, and writers of articles collect a mass of detail which is heaped together until there is danger that the man will be entirely hidden from view. Sterne, indeed, has not suffered so much in this way as many other authors, but he has not escaped unscathed. I have been careful to omit every thing that seems to me unessential to the under standing of the man; but I have endeavoured to collect all that helps to build up his character. Some writers on Sterne have chosen to para phrase his letters, and have put forth in their own words what Sterne (it is no discourtesy to them to say) has expressed infinitely better in his own. The simplest and, I think, the best way to Show the great man in his habit as he lived is to allow him, whenever possible, to speak for himself. It is with this object that I have printed most of the existing letters, written by Sterne, including several that have not been reprinted since the original publication shortly after his death, as well as others from private collections. The much-discussed Jour nal to Eliza now appears for the first time in a biography Of its author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Laurence Sterne, Vol. 2 France; but he lays his disgust principally to the account of the eternal platitude of the French character. He, too, was sick of the local parlia ment and its wrangles. If I do not mind, he said, I shall grow most stupid and sententious by mere contagion. His daughter, however, relished her new life much, and, with masters in music, dancing, and French, was rapidly adapting herself to the new country. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 2 Shandy. With little doubt he sat down to work in the last week of January, 1759. He was living much alone at Sutton that winter, for his wife had been placed under a physician's care at York; and to ward off melancholy on rainy days, he amused himself by writing a laughable book. Distracted only by the sentimental entanglement with Miss Fourmantelle, which occasioned visits to York so soon as spring broke, he went on easily with his work, completing the second volume as early as J une. While the book was in making, Sterne took some of the loose sheets over to his friend Croft's, where he read them to a company which the Squire of Still ington assembled for the purpose after dinner. Some of the company fell asleep, at which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
