Asia-Pacific Symposium on Mangrove Ecosystems

Asia-Pacific Symposium on Mangrove Ecosystems PDF Author: Yuk-Shan Wong
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401102899
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
Mangrove ecosystems are typical formations found in coastal deposits of mud and silt throughout the tropics and some distance into the subtropical latitudes. The total wordwide mangrove area, which is estimated at about 170,000 km2 with some sixty species of trees and shrubs exclusive to the habitat, dominates approximately 75% of the world's coastline between latitudes 25°N and 25°S. Such unique intertidal ecosystems support genetically diverse communities of terrestrial and aquatic organisms that are of direct or indirect socioeconomic values. Mangrove forests play important roles as coastal stabilization and protection against winds and storms; producers of nutrients, forest resources and animal species of economic importance. Recently, the issues on the conservation, proper utilization and management of mangrove forests have been widely discussed. Unfortunately, overexploitation and destruction of mangroves seriously threatens the sustainability of such a unique ecosystem. This volume includes papers on three main areas: recent advances in mangrove ecology; application and utilization of mangrove resources; and conservation and management of the ecosystems.

Development and the Environmental Crisis

Development and the Environmental Crisis PDF Author: Michael Redclift
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136880895
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
First published in 1984, Michael Redclift’s book makes the global environmental crisis a central concern of political economy and its structural causes a central concern of environmentalism. Michael Redclift argues that a close analysis of the environmental crisis in the South reveals the importance of the share of resources obtained by different social groups. The development strategies based on the experiences and interests of Western capitalist countries fail to recognise that environmental degradation in the South is a product of inequalities in both global and local economic relations and cannot be solved simply by applying solutions borrowed from environmentalism in the North. The key to understanding the South’s environmental problems lies in the recognition that structural processes – markets, technology, state intervention – are also a determining influence upon the way natural resources are used. Through his review of Europe’s Green Movement, contemporary breakthroughs in biotechnology and information systems and recent feminist discourse, Michael Redclift has enlarged the compass of the environmental debate and produced a book which should serve as a benchmark in future discussions of development and the environment. It will be of importance to students in a range of disciplines, within development studies, geography, ecology and the social sciences.

Rural Development

Rural Development PDF Author: John Harriss
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100093361X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
Originally published in 1982, this book provides an important set of basic materials for students of rural development. Key papers have been chosen and arranged, and the editor has provided a general introduction and passages that link the papers, alerting the student to rival theoretical interpretations and to regional parallels and contrasts. The book provides a basis for the analysis of the processes that make rural societies and economies what they are and substantially determine the changes that take place within them. The papers help the reader to understand the nature of the phenomena with which rural development has to deal, and in doing so to begin to evaluate the interventions of agencies and planners.
