Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Chemical Society of London, 1868, Vol. 21 In an early essay shown to friends privately, but never printed, he established the fact that bisulphate of potash con sists of sulphate of potassium combined with sulphate of hydrogen. Thence he assumed that all the acid salts are similarly constituted, for example, the bichromate of potash. On experiment, he found that this salt contained no hydrogen, and belonged to a class containing more than one equivalent of acid without the elements of water. He, consequently, lost faith in his theories, and shrunk from their consequences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Chemical Society of London, 1862, Vol. 15 Some of these salts are uncrystallizable, while others are easily obtained in crystals. The chloride, bromide, and iodide are amorphous, of a resinous character, and unfit for analysis. The oxalate I obtained by neutralizing the aqueous solution of the base with oxalic acid and evaporating. The crystals were of acicular form, and difficult to obtain. For additional corroboration of the formula of sparteine, I have examined several of its double-salts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Consequence of other more pressing matters occupying my attention, I was astonished on again examining this carbolate Of lime, to find the whole mass converted into a red substance, which, on treatment with water, gave a beautiful dark red solution; and not a trace of carbolic acid (phenyl-alcohol) could be extracted, either from the aqueous red solution or from the insoluble brown residue, the latter containing only carbonate of lime, a small quantity of caustic lime, and a dark brown resinous substance.
