Making the Invisible Visible

Making the Invisible Visible PDF Author: Donald A. Marchand
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This book presents a new way of seeing the business value of information, people and IT as well as a way of measuring and managing these capabilities in order to improve business performance. Packed with real-world examples, the book presents the best and worst practices companies have implemented to address these issues. Case studies from more than thirty international companies are strategically used throughout the book, including Banco Bilbao Vizcayo, Philips Business Electronics, Amazon, Dell Europe, Ernst Young, General Electric, IKEA, Ritz Carlton Hotels, and Wal Mart. This fascinating guide offers a diagnostic tool that senior managers can use to evaluate the three information capabilities of their company. Plus, the book provides hands-on management prescriptions on how to improve a company s information capabilities and how to use these capabilities in achieving business strategies and in the implementating change. We are all experiencing an information overload, be it internal to the organization or due to external influences of our own information intensive society. Much has been written on how companies should "tame the beast of information" and make it work in the organization's favour. What has not yet been covered is how an organization can actually comprehensively measure whether or not they are using information effectively to achieve better business performance, or in other words, how senior managers within an organization can measure "Information Orientation". Following a major 2 year global research project in conjunction with Andersen Consulting, the authors of this book have been able to demonstrate that when a company is high on IO it will be high on business performance. However, beyond just using IO as a diagnostic tool or a benchmark for the effective use of an organization's information, it can also predict the organization's business performance. Invariably, a company does not make the best use of available information. Having assessed why and where the failings are, this book will provide ways in which senior managers can actively manage the different elements of their Information Capabilities to improve the usage of information. Information Capabilities are defined in three ways: 1. Information Behaviours/Values 2. Information Management Practices 3. Information Technology practices. It is the total interaction of these three elements and the effective management of them that permits superior business performance. IO Maturity can be gained, but the authors illustrate that it is an iterative process that grows and changes in line with a turbulent environment. Managers of a high IO company realize the need to continually refine and improve their information use and to keep learning more about their business. IO begins at the top. It takes more than authorizing an IT investment and training staff to use information. It calls for different behaviours, values and practices by senior managers. This book provides the means to move towards IO maturity. It is the step beyond Information Technology to actually managing information. The aim of this book is to make a previously invisible dimension of business management visible. A manager, after reading this book, will be able to see, measure and manage the information resources, people and IT in the company and improve business performance.

Invisible Women

Invisible Women PDF Author: Caroline Criado Perez
Publisher: Abrams
ISBN: 1683353145
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
#1 International Bestseller Winner of the 2019 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award Winner of the 2019 Royal Society Science Book Prize A landmark, prize-winning, international bestselling examination of how a gender gap in data perpetuates bias and disadvantages women, now in paperback Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development to health care to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, because it treats men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this insidious bias, in time, in money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates this shocking root cause of gender inequality in the award-winning, #1 international bestseller Invisible Women. Examining the home, the workplace, the public square, the doctor’s office, and more, Criado Perez unearths a dangerous pattern in data and its consequences on women’s lives. Product designers use a “one-size-fits-all” approach to everything from pianos to cell phones to voice recognition software, when in fact this approach is designed to fit men. Cities prioritize men’s needs when designing public transportation, roads, and even snow removal, neglecting to consider women’s safety or unique responsibilities and travel patterns. And in medical research, women have largely been excluded from studies and textbooks, leaving them chronically misunderstood, mistreated, and misdiagnosed. Built on hundreds of studies in the United States, in the United Kingdom, and around the world, and written with energy, wit, and sparkling intelligence, this is a groundbreaking, highly readable exposé that will change the way you look at the world.

The Invisible Woman Becomes Visible!

The Invisible Woman Becomes Visible! PDF Author: Gwendolyn J. Wheeler
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1637108079
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 93

Book Description
The name of this book was derived from a college course, Systems Theory of Psychology. One of the major lessons I learned was, when people don't value you, they can make you invisible. Invisibility can be perpetuated in many different ways. To illustrate this truth, mixtures of corporate stories are shared. Identities of people and companies have been concealed. The professor who taught Systems Theory of Psychology said, "There should always be a learning process in everything we do." I asked him what I should learn from supporting an international sales force of fourteen people without appreciation and recognition. He enthusiastically responded, "You may have to learn it is time to look for another job." That psychology class became my therapy, which helped me to walk through the final days of my employment at that company and prepared me for my next chapter. Most of my thirty-seven-year corporate journey was spent in a secretarial/administrative role. Frankly, I had one of the best seats in the house. While supporting the senior leaders of companies, I learned a lot from the letters I typed, the papers I filed, the phone messages I took, the emails I read, and the conversations I overheard. Corporate America matured me and provided me with transferable skills. When I began working in corporate America, I was invisible, a shy, quiet, naive, young woman. Amazingly, I walked out a visible woman, stronger, confident, with leadership skills. Two nonprofit organizations emerged from me: a church, Cathedral of Faith International Ministries, Inc., and a personal ministry organization, Gwen Wheeler International Ministries, Inc. Additionally, after graduating from Rittners School of Floral Design in 2009, I started my floral design business, Sensational Floral Designs by Gwendolyn. May your journey through corporate America birth out of you stories that will heal, restore, and rescue others out of their invisibility. Don't give up! You are a champion, my friend. Visibility is on the horizon. Embrace it fiercely!
